Risks

I am not sure if there isn't a similar or even the same topic so if there is, forgive me and delete this.

I thought it would be good that all we would write all the risks starting from the very important and ending with something that is not prooved yet but is considered as a risk too.

So to start:

GENDER (being a woman is almost the bigger risk factor because women get BC 100 times more often than men)

AGE (the chances to get BC become bigger with the age)

EARLY FIRST MENSTRUATION, LATE MENOPACE

When I asked my surgeon what I had done to cause me to have BC because there was no family history, he told me that only accounts for about 10-15% of BC. I'm sure there are things that they think could play a factor in, like never having kids, but there are a whole lot of ladies out there with BC that had kids. He said the reason I have BC is because I'm a woman and have estrogen and progestine. Of coure I'm er/pr+ which says that my cancer was feeding off hormones, that why I'm now on Arimidex. I don't think they know why women are dx with BC who are er/pr-. I "think" the younger you are, the more likely you'll be er/pr-, but if I recall, 80% of a BC are er/pr+.

what does er/pr+ and er/pr- mean? Shocked

And how would I know which is mine?

You wouldn't know unless you had breast cancer. They would find out all of that when they send the breast tissue/tumor to pathology and that's when you find out everything. er/pr is the abbreviation of what I wrote about it.....estrogen receptor and progesterine receptor, 2 kinds of hormones we have.

I totally agree that we should all be aware of risk factors of breast cancer. One more thing that I have to emphasize is annual mammogram and breast examination are too important to ignore. Early diagnosis is the key to cure and have good prognosis.
