I'm Amanda and I'm 18.

About a year ago I had a bit of a scare when I found a lump on my left breast. I had it checked and it was just a calcium deposit. I was relieved to say the least.

Since then, my doctor advised me to come in every month so she could do a breast exam since I wasn't too comfortable doing it myself, for fear I didn't know exactly what I was doing. I'm overweight and I'm a smoker, plus I've had a number of other health problems so she felt it was best.

A little over a week ago I went in for another breast exam and my doctor found two new lumps on my right breast. Right after she told me I wasn't too concerned because I expected her to tell me it was another few calcium deposits. Instead, she told me that they didn't feel right at all and that I should go in for testing.

Literally the day after I was in for an ultrasound and got those results five days later. They were inconclusive, and I was then set up for a biopsy. I had the biopsy yesterday which was weird. I was shaking like crazy for some reason. I heard it's very uncommon for people my age to have breast cancer, but I'm assuming theres still a chance.

So far, I'm taking it well. It hasn't really hit me that cancer might be a possibility.

I'm curious as to how other people handled the news either when they found out they might have cancer, or when they found out they did have cancer.

Amandalynn, I'm so sorry to hear of the scare you are going through, and so young too. It is scary and every person takes it differently. I was really calm and positive with the two Cancers i had, (nose and cervical). I was like- ok lets beat this thing..Take it all. i don't care i just want to live.

But with the scares i get from time to time, like the lup i found under my arm/breast. and future cervical scares- for some reason, i totally freak. This forum has helped me so uch, to overcome those feelings and to help others.

I guess till you know excatly what it is and what you'll have to do/ treat. Just try to stay positive and not stress too much. Rolling Eyes (i know), But it is true stress feeds worry.

All the best and good luck- let us know what happens.

I wasn't scared waiting for the results, because my mammogram was normal and they said my ultra sound showed I just had a cyst, but my gut said to get the lump out. The surgeon and my PCP both said I had nothing to worry about. No family hx, I was young etc. etc. I was dx Stage III Invasive Lobular BC. When I got that news, it was an emotional roller coaster from hell. I was scared, in disbelief, I didn't want to die and then I got mad, really mad at the cancer and I got in the fighting mode of kicking cancer's butt.

I've heard of one 19 year old that had BC in the whole time since I was dx and she had been dx a few years before me, so I've only head of one is about 9 years. Anything is possible, but it's highly unlikely that you have breast cancer.

Please let us know when you get the results.

If you are wanting to quit smoking, do it now before you're so addicted it's even harder. Take it from someone who knows. The longer you smoke, the harder it is to quit because it becomes such a huge part of your every day life.

Amanda,

I am a 30 year old who just found out I have Stage IV breast cancer at the end of May.

Initially I went to the doctor because I felt a mass...he wasn't sure what it was...I had been breast-feeding my babies (had triplets last June)...so he thought maybe a blocked milk duct at first....but I wasn't having any pain associated with it so it didn't make sense...he didn't really think it could be cancer either b/c of my young age and not having it run in the family....so we were stumped and I went in for a biopsy....

the biopsy freaked me out! I didn't want a needle going into that soft tissue! Ouch! But, I got through it...when I left I really didn't worry about it...they said to call the next day and they'd "maybe" have the results...otherwise, I'd have to wait over the weekend....

So, I decided to call the next afternoon....not expecting to get any results....and you can imagine my surprise when he told me, "Yes, you have breast cancer". I was in complete shock. I couldn't breathe....he asked if I could come right into the office to discuss in further detail....

I don't want to scare you, but it is real. And it is possible. But don't get yourself all upset until you know for sure....You can worry yourself sick for no reason...

Best of luck to you and please do post your results....Would love to chat with you.

Unfortunately, it's not unusual these days to see women in their 30's or even late 20's being dx. Family hx only accounts for between 10-15% of all breast cancer dx. Mammograms, even though they are the best we have and I highly recommend women get them because they DO find BC at early stages, they miss 45% of all BC in women under 50 (under that is considered young and higher risk) and 35% over 50. I wish they'd tell us these things before we're dx. It seems many doctors still think family hx is a huge factor and that mammograms results are full proof. I was told I was fine and to come back in a year........ Good thing I didn't listen.

Muttsmom, your story reads like mine. I was told "you are young I don't think the lump you found is cancer come back in four weeks" I didn't listen and that saved my life. I agree that doctors and some women beleive that great deal of breast cancer diagnosis is family histroy.Women need to be proactive, be our own advocates when it comes t0 our health.
Dear Amanda, sorry to hear what you are going through at such a young age. Be strong, his healing touch is deeper than all we go through.
I will encourage to be proactive and take charge with up date information that can help you even with your other health issues Smile .
