The urologist assured us he removed a 'cyst' from my father's scrotum but pathology came back 'sarcoma.' We've been waiting for a plan for my father's tx for over a week and we're getting very anxious. The urologist said it is not a common type of cancer and very rare to be found in the scrotum. I worry because he is not familiar with this scrotal sarcoma and I wonder where dad can get the best care.

I forgot to mention that my dad's only physician is the Urologist. Shouldn't he be referred to a cancer specialist?

Daisy,

I think your father should visit with an oncologist as well to decide on treatment plans. Wait for the lab from Boston to review the slides.

regards,
Leo

Leo,

I know we can't change the results of the path reports but I was worried that too much time was passing before his treatment started. But as you say, the most important thing, right now, for my dad is getting the right diagnosis.

Thank you for your reply to me, Leo, and your kindness to others on the board. We are all scared and your replies remove some of that fear for us.

You are a credit to your profession, don't lose your compassion for people.

I appreciate your kind words. Sarcomas have variable presentations. Some grow very rapidly, while others are more indolent. Again, we can't know how it will behave unless we have the right diagnosis. I am hoping that they will review the slides and come up with an answer ASAP.

best regards,
Leo

Hey All,
Dad's urologist called today. He was told that his cancer most resembled spindle cell. Every website I go to makes me more depressed. But the good new is, he's sees an oncologist on Tuesday, at least we're finally physically starting the battle.
I want to take him to Sloan Kettering and MD Anderson has been mentioned.
Websites, I know, are as good as the webmaster who designed them, but I've heard these are 2 hospitals who aggressively treat sarcomas. Has anyone had any experience with either of the 2? Leo, I don't know if you're allowed to say, but if so, do you have a preference? Or is there someplace else, that is even better? My parents live in Ohio, I live in Texas but am quite comfortable in Manhattan. I will stay with my parents if I get them out of Dayton. (unless of course, they prefer to be alone)

Daisy,

Whichever place you choose, your dad will be *very* well taken care of. I honestly have no preference. Both places are spectacular.

best regards,
Leo

Well, Harvard tells the urologist dad's cancer is so rare they would like to be kept up to date on everything. We were told he's in the Intermediate Stage.
Dad is bulking at leaving his home and going to Sloan or MD Anderson and I can understand that from the point of a 72 yr old man. But the nurse in me says why let a rookie do the job when you can go to the big hitters. But the last thing I'd want to do is upset my dad, because his head is already spinning and he's educated himself enough to be very scared.

Hi Leo and all,
Strange happenings.
Went with Dad to MD Anderson. He was told by physican that the ct scan that was read as clear in Dayton, Ohio actually has shadows on it. The sarcoma specialist feels like Dad has a very large tumor in the back of his abdomen. It is not treatable by surgery, chemo, or radiation. Very bleak news, as we were told he was cancer -free by his original physicans. What a roller coaster.

Leo

we were told chemo wasn't effective for this
do you know differently?
tomorrow we hear results of abdominal mri and ultrasound of pelvis.
guess we'll ask about clinical studies.
it seems so surreal.
my dad looks extremely healthy (73 yr). was throwing football with one of my boys, yesterday.
the kid is a varsity football player and grandpa was better.
i hate it that they were given the all clear in dayton
only to be told, not only are you not all clear
you have a massive tumor in your gut.
i'll tell you leo, we heard so many misdiagnosis horror stories while we were there.
work hard and find some cures. this old world is losing a lot of great people way too early.
thanks,
ava

Hi All,

My family has been fortunate enough to be evaluated at MD Anderson. As an RN who has worked in hospitals big and smalll, private, children's, and county I am blown away by the positive attiutde and awesome medical care that my dad and his family have received. What an awesome place to be evaluated as a cancer patient. I am a nurse of 28 years. I have never been more impressed by a facility. I hope that all who attend this board are able to research and find such a facillity.

My father who owns the diagnosis of this sarcoma has now said, "no matter what the outcome, I know I have done the best I can by coming to MD Anderson.' There will be no should haves, would haves, could haves.

My prayers and thoughts are with all on this board. I wish you the strength to find answers and fight the good fight!

Even though I don't know you,
I love you and will you strength
Daisy

Thanks for your kind words. MD Anderson has the reputation it has for things like you described. I have been there once for an interview. It is indeed an excellent center.

best regards,
Leo
