I just found out that my Dad has colon cancer. He went into the hospital 3 weeks ago with severe rectal bleeding and renal failure. They found a large mass in his lower intestine, and did a biopsy which came back positive.

I don't even know what to ask? My Dad is 84, and has mid stage Alzheimers. I lost my Mom to Luekemia several yrs ago. I am the only child. My Dad doesn't know what is going on, that he is so sick.

They said they don't want to treat his cancer because it is so far advanced. He is in in-patient Hospice in the hospital now.

I see here there are "stages", but a stage wasn't mentioned to me. After reading this forum, I have more questions for the Doctor in the morning.

I am so scared and confused. I am scared to ask how long they think he might have?

Can you help me on what to ask the doctors? How can they say that no treatment is what is best?

Geri, I am so sorry about your father's cancer and overall heath condition. I wish I knew more about colon cancer, but alas I do not. I do hear how hard and scary all of this is for you.

The first line treatment would be surgery. But it does not sound like your father's medical team thinks that is a viable option. Chemotherapy can be so toxic!

Don't be afraid to ask the doctors all of your questions. Otherwise, how will you be able to make informed decisions? If you need an help understanding what they tell you, we can help. Staging of the cancer is very important in determining treatment options and prognosis so try to at least get that question answered.

I will be thinking about and praying for you and your father.
