Hello all,
I am a 50 year old male, diagnosed with multiple myeloma 14 years ago. I am currently receiving Velcade . I understand this is given as a 3 to 5 second injection. My last injection was given over a much longer period(30 - 40 sec.) ,I did mention this to the nurse but i dont think she was aware of the 3-5 sec. injection time.I am not due to see my consulant for another month.Would any of you know how important is the injection time.Thanks.

Hi Techmad, I do not have personal experience with Velcade. However, in general, the only reason to give a slower injection is for vein preservation, i.e. dilatine burns like sandpaper if give too fast. Some medications could possibly make a person feel sick or have a negative reaction to medication if it is given too fast. How was your you experience the first injection. If you did not have any problems, then do not worry too much about the time. However, you still will want to discuss this with your medical team.

My ex-father in law struggled for several years with multiple myeloma. I know how difficult an illness it can be. Best wishes. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks brainman for such a quick reply. What you say makes a lot of sense,I am probably over cautious about these things but chemotheraphy is a serious drug.I will discuss this with my consultant asap.
I still wonder however why the customer information leaflet states 3-5 second injection, surely it would be less confusing for the average patient such as myself.( but I am inclined to ask too many questions)and leave injection times to a trained nurse.
Thanks again,
Techmad

Techman, you are very wise to ask questions. Do not hesitate to post your questions here or, better yet, ask your medical team. Basically, what the customer information leaflet is saying is that they can administer it as fast is they want. There are only a few injections that can go in any faster than 3 seconds. That is my hunch anyhow.
