Hello everyone,
I registered just to ask this question, because I am VERY worried.
I am 17 years old.
About a month ago, going on vacations, I was messing around with some friends at the airport, near the place where they check your hand luggage with the X ray machine. We had already gone trough and we were waiting for the rest of the group. In the meantime I saw an empty X ray machine. I said "Hey I wonder if it'll show my hand's bones moving if I put it in there" so I put my hand beyond my wrist. I waited a lil bit, like 5-6 seconds, then a image showed up (It seems the machine takes a "photo", instead of always showing what's passing trough) the image it showed was all blurry . Then a security man came running and pulled back my hand and I said I could get cancer.
I am really, really worried.
I was very stupid and I would give anything in the world just to go back and change that.
I really want to know, what are my chances of getting cancer in my hand/arm because of this???
I have an appointment with my doctor next week, and Im going to ask her to make tests on me to see if I have cancer, but please, please, tell me how high are my chances of getting cancer from this. I would really appreciate it. what is the difference between the security x ray at airports and the usual x rays at hospitals? are they more dangerous? |

Hi,
While what you did is not exactly the safest thing to do, the radiation level from one of those scanner is very low and therefore the probability of getting cancer is likewise very low. You probably got less radiation than you would have received if you had a x-ray of your hand at a hospital or doctor's office! _________________ Jim

I don't even know if you will get Prostate Cancer. However, you should get a "baseline" PSA level blood test sometime in your early 30's. My advice is you should ask your doctor if you need earlier screening for PC since your have a family history of this form of cancer. _________________ Jim
