My 21 yr old girlfriend begins chemo and radiation for the squamous cell carcinoma in her tongue next week (7-23-07). She will be on cisplatin and though Im doing tons of research I would like to know about anyones personal experiences with the drug. Any info you have will be greatly appreciated. We have been together six years and we are planning on getting married when I finish my undergrad. She just graduated from nursing school in May 2007. She also had surgery on her tongue in April 2007 and again in June 2007. Her neck and her lymph nodes are cancer free at this point.

Hi Andrew,

I had chemo and radiation, but not the same kind of cancer and I'm not familiar with that chemo. I will say that they have much better nausea meds today then they did 5 years ago when I went through it. They really have come a long way in making treatment more doable.

I wish your g/f the best and she'll be going on an emotional roller coaster, and will have emotions she didn't realize she had. I know you will be on your own roller coaster ride, but you being there and being supportive will mean so much to her and help her more then words can say.

You both are in my prayers

I had a different type of cancer, but was given Cisplatin for my chemo.

I was able to handle it pretty well, only got really nauseated at the very end of my final cycle. I was pretty tired and slept quite a bit, but was still able to work about 5 hrs. a day.

I did not lose any weight or lose any hair, not that I would have noticed been shaving my head for years.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your girlfriend.

Hi sapetty, I am so sorry to hear about your girlfriend's cancer! Have they done any surgery so far? That can be the most devastating thing about tongue cancers of any kind.

I do not know all the side effects of Cisplatin. However, I do know that it is widely used and has been around for many years. Therefore, its side effect and how to cope with the chemotherapy have been well studied. Her medical team should know exactly what to do in order to help your girlfriend through this time in her life.

I will keep both of you in my thoughts and my prayers.
