my son age 33 now has had 8 chemo treatments of ABVD, his dr. says it's pretty strong stuff. before he was dx. he was getting drenching night sweats, after a few treatments they stopped, my son told me tonight that for the past week he has been getting drenching night sweats again. does any one know why that could be happening? i will call his dr. in the morning but won't be able to sleep because i will be worried all night wondering why.

The more you worry the more you are going to stress him out.

Night sweats are just a symptom of the disease. Definitely bring it up to the doctor, but I wouldn't worry so much. Lymphoma is very treatable, and he will be fine. I am saying that not just because thats what you are supposed to say to people, but because the odds are way in his favor. I know parents worry, but we (your cute little offspring) catch on to your worrying, and as much as we love you for worrying about us, keep it to a minimum. He's 33 and hopefully living a great life on his own with out you for a while. He'll be fine.

He loves you for worrying really, but you don't need to.

Just my take as an adult (a young one, 22 but adult enough) with Hodgkins.

Hi, worriedmom,
I have followed your story through other threads; you have had a long and difficult journey with your son's illness and I am glad you have found this cyberplace to share your feelings and concerns.

Like your son, I had ABVD chemo (12 doses, ten years ago for stage IIIB HL) and I recall right after the mid-point of treatment I started getting low grade fevers in the evenings. My hema/onc doc was not too concerned, but wanted me to be sure that if it ever got over 99 degrees, I should go to the emergency room if it was after his office hours. I gave myself Neupogen injections for a large part of my treatment (especially after my red cell count came back up as a result of Procrit injections at the beginning of tx and the chemo started wiping out my white cells). Is your son on Neupogen? It can cause fevers, which may account for his night-sweats.

I knew when I was sick that it was very hard on my family to see me extremely thin, red-eyed, without hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and pale as a ghost. I was fortunate to live on my own where most of my side-effects were known only to me and my doctor and I could protect my family from frequent worry. I know this is a very hard time for you as a mother. Hang in there; your son is past the mid-point, and what a celebration you will have in a few months to have all this behind you!

Wishing you the very best and a swift (and uneventful) end to your son's treatment,
Jessica

thank you jessica for your reply. my son's wbc went down to 2.9 so his dr. said it was to low to have his chemo treatment that week he waited a week and had his treatment and now he has an injection of neulasta, which he will have the day after every chemo treatment for the rest of his chemotreatments. he has had 4 treatments since he has been getting the neulasta, which makes his bones hurt and back hurt and makes him even more nauseated but now his wbc is 14.0 and the chemo nurse said we will keep an eye on it.my son has a little head cold right now. his oncol. is on vacation right now.his rbc is 4.22 lower than it's been in the past. his hematocrit is 38.9 is also lower. he was doing pretty good mentally but lately it's been getting him down, i was wondering if his dr. could put him on somthing to help him with that.

Absolutely worriedmom!! There are medications that can help with each of those side-effects. Unfortunately, some are rather expensive and the results vary from one individual to the next. Talk to your son's medical team about these issues. If it is need, doctors do not leave town without some type of backup. The doctor's nurse is the person you should talk to if the doctor is not available.

Best wishes. I will keep your son in my thoughts and prayers.
