My friend is about to start chemo next week, and I want to know what it will feel like. She has been told of all the side effects and how she may feel AFTER the treatment, but will she feel anything during her chemo?

Thanks xx

Hi Emily, I am truly sorry to hear that your friend will begin chemotherapy soon. What kind of chemo will your friend be receiving? How often will your friend need to take it? Your post does not give enough information about your friend for us to tell you what she should expect will receiving the treatment.

My father received I.V. Chemotherapy 3 times a week. Mostly, the "during" side effects were the same as the "after". They just progressively became worse.

Keep us informed.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

If your question means "will there be pain" - apart from the usual sharp pain of a needle when the canula is inserted, there is not usually any pain. Some chemo drugs can feel cold, and sometimes there may be an ache in the veins.

Everyone is different in their reaction to the drugs, so it is possible that she will feel headachy as they are administered.

As far as I know, she will be receiving chemo for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off (not sure for how long), Does that sound about right? I also know they were talking about inserting a port into her chest... again, not sure how correct all this is as my friend has gotten herself in to a right state due to nerves.

I think like someone explained about, she just wanted to know if it hurt went it was being pumped around. You know when you have a general anaesthetic, and you can feel that going through you, is it similar to that?

Thank you all so much for your help. It really means a lot to us. Sorry my information isn't more specific, I'm trying to get more details out of her now =)

Good luck everyone xx

Yes, Emily. But everyone is different and it depends on the chemo that she will receive. Sometimes, especially after a few weeks, it might become harder to find a "good" vein and that can be a little painful but not anymore so that someone who has to have multiple blood tests. Again, that varies from person to person.
