My Dad was diagnosed with probable colon cancer eleven days ago. He was scheduled for surgery the following day because the mass was blocking everything. The surgeon removed it and told my Mom and I things were looking good and that he also removed some lymphnodes that would indicate whether or not he had cancer in those that could spread. We were hopeful but today we received bad news and the surgeon wants him to start chemotherapy in 9 weeks..thatjust seems so long to wait. He had a couple complications... during surgery the surgeon had to switch procedures from laporascopic to a more envasive approach and he has to wear a bag for 2-3 months until he is healed when he will have to have another surgery to attach the colon to the rectum. With surgery i can see that he needs to heal before chemotherapy but Is is it unusual or risky to wait so long? I have heard 8 weeks maximum to start chemo???
Any info will help and be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Steph

Steph, this is just an educated guess, but maybe the doctors do not want to start the chemo until your father has had time to recover from his surgery. This is one of those excellent questions to ask your father's medical team. If you continue to be concerned, you can always get a second opinion.

Colon cancer metastasizes very often. That is the reason for the chemo. Another great question for his medical team.

I wish you and your dad the best.

Hello Steph, I thnk it is normal to wait after that kind of surgery. My husband also had to wait after surgery. He even had radiotherapy before getting chemiotherapy. He had stage 4 with a meta to the liver. Later he had radiofrequency, then liver surgery and several different chemios. (I think he tried them all) Now, two and a half years later he is still on chemio. But he goes on enjoying life, family and friends. You will need courage to go through this but it is worthwhile because we want to keep our loved ones with us.
