i have an aquaintance who got really sick, and went to the hospital who ran tests to determine that she had high blood pressure and as a result of that i guess developed damage to her heart muscle..they determined that she had leukemia after further tests and was probally the cause of her highblood pressure..
she was told that she is not able to have surgery for her heart because of the leukemia.
i was wondering if any had or know anyone who had similar experience.
will the heart worsen as a result of the leukemia?
what affect will the chemo have on the heart?
and will it effect her prognosis?

I know when my daughter was diagnosed they did an echocardiogram on her to make sure her heart was strong enough to take the chemo. She had a lot of masses in her chest and her heart was a little enlarged and had a little fluid around it, but she did fine. She also had one lung partially compressed from the masses in her chest. Her breath sounds are good and no heart mummur that he could hear. That is good news. She will have another echocariogram done soon to see if the chemo or radiation did any damage. I don't know if this helps you because I am sure it depends on various things such as age, type of chemo, etc. Everyone is different and their bodys all react differently and tolerate in different ways. I would say talk to her doctor and ask what your concerns are. We asked so many questions and research on the internet to try to understand how it worked and just learn and be informed. Our oncologist is great and the hospital too. They provided us with a lot of literature and we could call our oncologist at any time of day or night if we had questions. Well I have gotten long winded, sorry. Hope that things go well for you and your friend. God bless.

Hi concerned1,

I imagine that there is no direct correlation between your acquaintance's leukemia and heart/blood pressure problems. The only possibility I can think of is that the leukemia came first which made her/him susceptible to infections. An infection developed in his/her heart and weakened the heart muscle which in turn is causing the blood pressure problem. That is one scenario... there are probably many others. Ask your friend's medical team. Good luck to you and your friend.
