I am a 26 year old man. I have had IBS type symptoms for some months now - say well before Christmas. In recent weeks I have a crampy abdominal pain in my lower left abdomen. I have also felt very tired of late (although I do have young son and busy job). I feel pretty weak - for example - I notice my legs tiring when I climb the stairs. No weight loss that I can discern. No nausea and I still have a good appetite.

My diet is not the best I suppose but not the worst either. I drink but do not smoke.

Just today I went to the toilet and when I looked at my poo it was sort of reddy in colour. There was a little fresh blood in the water. I have never had this before but I have had blood on the toilet paper on two previous occasions within the last few months. I put this down to piles but I have never been diagnosed with same.

Obviously my concern is with cancer. Can anyone offer help, guidance?

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read and respond.

Yours

Sean

Make an appointment for a colonoscopy.

Chances are, this isn't anything. Only 10% of people who get colonoscopies find out they have cancer. However, do make an appointment for a colonoscopy, just to be sure. If you insurance company won't pay for it, if you're in the US you're too young, pay for it out of your pocket. At least you'll have peace of mind that it isn't something bad.

I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer when I was 43 in July of '04. It was only by a fluke that I even had a colonoscopy. A walk in Dr. suggested it when I was getting my allergy scripts renewed. He told me to get a colonoscopy just in case it was Chrons or IBS. It certainly wasn't cancer, so I was told not to worry.

When I went in for my colonoscopy, that Dr. tried to talk me out of it since, my insurance company would not pay for it, I had no symptoms, I was too young and I had no symptoms.

But, I did the prep work and had one anyway. The story was totally different afterwards. I can't tell you how happy I am that I had one even though so many road blocks were put in my way. I would, of couse, had been far happier if I could have been one of the 90% who gets a clean bill of health, but my experience hasn't been to bad.

So, get a colonoscopy even if you have to pay for it.

seandevalera,
Get an evaluation, probably by a GI specialists would be better. It's difficult to say if this is your IBS or something else. Get it worked up to figure it out. Good luck.
