My Mother, became aware of her right breast three weeks back after her nipple became inverted. She did have a pain in it last oct went to her GP and he couldn't find anything. So when she noticed the inverted nipple she got an appointment for today. She had a mammogram, then she was seen by a specialist for an examination, where they found a lump and did a biopsy on it. She has to wait a week for the results..... i am worried sick and so is she. As she is thinking was it there in October the first time she went to see someone about it. Basically we are thinking the worst, its just awful. Has this happened to anyone??? Can anyone tell me anything?
Thanks so much

csquared,
I think the best thing to do is keep your mind off this topic until you find out the biopsy result. A lot of speculation of what this might be does very little except to increase anxiety. You've already have the definitive test pending so try to be patient. Good luck,

A week sounds like a long time. I had a Tuesday biopsy and results were in on Thursday afternoon even though the doctor didn't call until Friday morning. You might call the office and find out if they can get you answers sooner than a week.

Stay positive.

Hi,
After she had the mammogram and the core biopsy on the 12th. When we went back on the 18th April and she was told that she had cancer just under her nipple and what was recommended was a mastectomy. My mother went in yesterday and had her surgery today the 24th.

So now another waiting game, as they have to send off her removed breast for analysis. (Is this normal having to wait to see what treatment she will need?) After that we will know what treatment she will need to receive.

I can't describe how incredibly brave she is and how proud of her we all are.

Thanks

I wish your mother the best of success with her healing. The first part will be for her to deal with her drains - hopefully you can help her with them to make her life a little easier. Then, based on the pathology, your mother's oncologist will plan her medication regime - chemo...

As a survivor, my suggestion is that she take it easy and take it one day at a time. She will need to know what the results of her report are: is she estrogen recptor positive or negative, HER2 positive or negative, the size of the tumor and the stage of the tumor.

You didn't mention if she had reconstruction at the time of surgery or if she is waiting or if she has decided to simply use a prosthesis. Whatever she decides is just fine.

Help her keep her spirits up as women who have a 100% positive outlook heal much more quickly. We are lucky these days as cancer is no longer a death sentence.

When she is feeling up to it, your mom may find it helpful to attend a local breast cancer support group. I've been going to one for over a year and always learn something new each time I go. And, I love the information that the other survivors share.

Thank you so much for your best wishes they are really appreciated, i can't believe how everyone has been so kind. With there wishes, prayers, phonecalls, get well cards, everything it has just been amazing.

My mom decided just to go with the prosthesis, she has the attitude to leave well enough alone. As far as we know the tumor was about 4cm, but as for stage, estrogen/HER2 positive or negative we won't know for a week, week and a half.

She has to have a bone scan and also an ultrasound of her stomach, do you know if this is a normal procedure for breast cancer patients?

Thank you so much for your support... it is a tough time for everyone especially my mom, but with people like yourself you bring ease to peoples mind, so thank you. Very Happy

Hi,

I had a bone scan but nothing with the stomach. We are all such individuals and no two cases are the same. Certainly the doctor has important diagnositic reasons.

Hopefully, once your mom gets her surgery results that she finds a wonderful medical oncologist.

Also, if you emotionally need to, call the surgeons office after about four days to get the pathology report. No one should have to wait a week and a half for results that are usually back sooner than that.
