Hello All, Can anyone here speak about MRI, and I guess the need for?

My Urologist, and potential surgeon diagnosed me with Prostate cancer back in March and recommenced a prostectomy. His preferred method is open surgery.

The second surgeon I spoke with has recommenced daVinci laparascopic and recommended an MRI the day before surgery.

The third surgeon I spoke with, who would also do a daVinci laparascopic procedure has said due to my age, my low PSA and relatively low Glesaons that an MRI would not be called for as there is no indication the cancer has spread beyond the prostate. By the way this third surgeon has performed 200+ daVinci prostectomys and the second surgeon 60+ ( The first surgeon I have pretty much decided not to go with due to his preference for the "open" method.)

P.S.... let me give you a little background on myself.... I'm 52 year old recently diagnosed with Prostate cancer. My current PSA is upper 4.'s ( high of 5.82 ). Biopsies I had done in March came back positive with a Gleasons score of 6 ( 3 / 3 ) and by DRE my surgeons (!!) describe the stage as T1c.

grynch,
If you go by the NCCN guidelines, which can be found here
http://www.nccn.org/professionals/physician_gls/default.asp

then, they don't recommended CT/MRI for people with a low likelihood of LN involvement. From what you've said thus far, you seem to be in a low risk category for LN involvement. Some use the Memorial-Sloan Kettering prostogram to help calculate this. You can find more info here:

Thus I think your 3rd doctor seems to have the most reasonable approach inline with standard of care in the US from the limited information you have given us. Good luck.
