If my sister-in-law's breast cancer has returned (2 previous recurrences) and shows up in this week's PET Scan, what words does she need to hear from me to help her through this?

JustineHH,
In general, words of support. Consider reposting this in coping and support instead of cancer pain. You'll probably get more responses.

Hi Justine,
Your sister-in-law is fortunate to have people who care about her. I do not think word will be what she needs. A hug might be better. Listening to what she has to say might also be a better option. During my hospitalization, the visitor I appreciated the most was a friend who did not know what to say but was willing to listen to me talking about my fears. If you do feel like you need to say something, a heart-felt “I love you and am here for you” might be all she needs to hear.

I will keep you and your sister-in-law in my thoughts and prayers. Please, keep us informed.

Thanks so much. I was obsessing over what to say.

She lives far away so I can't hug her. But last night I sent her a HUG Care2 email card and said I was here if she needed me. I've not heard from her in four days now and am scared for her.

Hello Justine,

Your reply from Jim was very true with some good ideas. I've had a BC recurrence and appreciated so much having someone to listen and give hugs. What made me upset was those who insisted loudly that I would get through this and live until I was 100. Also those who repeatedly said 'be positive' - this didn't sound sincere. I hope I will be positive and will live until I'm 100 but when I got the news I didn't feel comforted at all by those thoughts. Truly there will be many well meaning people [who don't know what to say] so as a friend just chat frequently and allow her to talk.

My best comforter other than my husband was a long distance friend who rang frequently and let me cry and talk [and complain].

You have a very important role- all the best!

Hi Justine,
Just a note to say I am thinking about you and your sister-in-law. How are things going?
