hi,
my 27 year old thai girlfriend has just been diagnosed with liver cancer. ive been told its the size of a fist. ive been told theres no chance she can be operated on and basically its now just a waiting game. shes had the tumor for about a year they reckon.
can someone please advise on how (roughly) that wait will be?
what are the chances of chemo working and its success?
are there any other types of treatment that could help?
im not very clever when it comes to matters of the body and would really appreciate some help.
thanks j |

Hi Jimmy, sorry about your girlfriend...
I'm not in a position to answer your questions since I'm not a doctor, but I believe that you will find a lot of information in this site if you read through a few of the posts - where we all just share our personal experiences.
If I was in your girlfriend's shoes, I would demand to have clear answers abour all possible scenarios from my doctors. She has the right to make her own decisions on what she should do next.
With loving thoughts,

hi mandy,
thanks for the kind words. we will be seeking a second opionion in the next few days, we are all trying to cope with the shocking news at the moment.
we have at the moment one of the top doctors in thailand helping us. not a specialist in liver cancer, but someone who has received countless awards from the prime minister in the last few years.
but denial is creeping in. the drugs are starting to work, and her strength his doubling every day. but deep down we know the outcome. one way or another. as i said in an earlier post, im no expert when it comes to medical science, but just searching thru threads we/i get the jest when it comes to liver cancer.
i am an optimist however. tomorrow is thai new year and every day is a day spent together. another happy day. another day we share. another day we love. another day we kiss.
she truly is the most happy, sweetest girl anyone could meet and im so lucky for my time with her and time we have.
god bless you all
(ill keep you updated) best wishes j |

jimmyd,
Liver cancer is more common in Asia due to a higher incidence of hepatitis. In general, liver cancer is difficult to treat; however, Sorafenib has recently been approved in the US for liver cancer, specifically hepatocellular cancer (HCC). Apparently a phase III trial named SHARP was stopped early because of the benefit for patients. I would definitely get a 2nd opinion from a place that specializes in HCC if this is what your girlfriend has been diagnosed with recently and ask about Sorafenib therapy as an option. Best wishes, _________________ RLee, MD
