Hello, I just had a routine mammogram yesterday and they said that there was a small cyst or lump very deep in my breast, so deep that they had trouble picking it up on the ultrasound. They also said it couldn't be felt through self exam. I am 45 and going through peri-menopause, I don't know if it's all related or not. Anyway, the radiologist said to wait for 6 months and then have another mammogram done. I'm at a complete loss and worried sick. Should I get a second opinion or wait it out? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated. My thought's and prayer's are with everyone. _________________ Darla |

darla6061,
I think you should do what will keep you feel better for the next months. Waiting another 6mo seems reasonable, but if you won't be able to sleep at night, a 2nd opinion never hurts. Best wishes, _________________ RLee, MD

rlee...I'm sorry, but I do not agree that waiting 6 months is reasonable. I do not feel that any woman who has been told that there is a cyst or lump deep in the breast should wait 6 months and come back for another mamm. No lump belongs in the body. If they have confirmed a lump...it should be removed...no matter what. I had a lump that was 1.5 cm's at the time I discovered it. By the time I had my surgery, it had grown to 3-5 cm's and had spread into my nodes. It was agressive. If they know the lump is there, as confirmed...it needs to come out. Six months, as far as I am concerned, is a long time to let a lump just sit there...not knowing if it is cancer, or not. Six months can make a big difference. IF it is cancer, that six months could allow it to spread. If there is a confirmed lump, I say never, never, never wait six months to see what it does. I say have it biopsied/removed...and I am sure that most women who have had breast cancer will agree. Ladies??? _________________ Where is the cure???

Thank you and I tend to agree with the not waiting 6 mos. When I told my daughter that was what the radiologist wanted me to do, she was livid. I too have thought about what could happen if I wait. I want to know now and have it taken care of and if need be start treatment IF it is indeed cancer. The sooner the better I would think. I have an appointment with the doctor next Thursday and am going to push to have this looked into and hopefully resolved. _________________ Darla |

i understand the anxiety that condition can start. I agree with Cindy about getting a second opinion. it is always prudent. In case too it is actually what we dread, 6 months is a long time for it to have developed badly. Whether or not, however, these are any sort more disturbing, the body's immune system is really the first line of defense if not really our defense of the first order against diseases of all kinds including those we dread. May i share with you this site on the body's immune system and its abilities to altogether protect or help the body recover from such illnesses.

I don't disagree with any of the previous comments, but within the realm of what would be consider standard of care within the US, repeat imaging in 6 months would probably be reasonable as well. Without knowing more specifics of the case, it difficult to be definitive. Thus, if any question remains, a 2nd opinion is always prudent especially if it can bring piece of mind. _________________ RLee, MD
