Hello Dr leo;
A friend just walked in here at our drop in who is going to have surgery in March to remove a tumor. The doctor has done blood tests and X-rays, and has told him that he has a tumor that may be cancer.
Brian is a marginalized adult with no schooling, so the details he has given me or been told may be a bit sketchy.
Wouldn't a biopsy be done to determine if the tumor is cancerous? What else is useful to know....??? I am one of his primary support people...
Thanks,

Pastor Rich,
I am assuming you are talking about a liver tumor ? Anyway, it usually is biopsied first. He needs to have a workup to determine if the tumor is primary or a metastatic tumor from somewhere else. Anyway, with this social background things are so much more difficult... I suspect he may also have problem with insurance and that also does not benefit him.
But this is a patient that has a lot to go through. If he has liver cancer it is not good, because he needs a lot of care, surgery if possible.
regards,

Hello Dr. Leo;
Yes, it is a liver tumor.
Fortunately, we live in Ontario Canada so our health care is world-class and provided through our tax system. So my friend will get good care...
The humor in this situation is that I went to university with his doctor, who wanted to become a gynocologist for the reason that most 20 year-old men want to become one. I haven't seen him since 1973 but knew he was here in town somewhere.....
If my friend has had blood tests and X-rays, would the surgery that is scheduled for March be the normal plan to do a biopsy on the tumor that is removed then???
Thanks, rich _________________ "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Phil 4:6-7 |

Pastor Rich
Not knowing details about this case, in general the sooner we can get a biopsy result the better. Sometimes the tumor is just too deep for a percutaneous biopsy to be done. I am glad that the health system you guys have in place accomodates all. In summary, I would ask his doctor the reason why a tissue diagnosis is not obtained sooner. 2-3 months sounds like a long time in such a case, but I can not make any conclusions without knowing more.
best regards,
