I have a friend in Chicago who is suffering from stage 4 Small Cell lung cancer. Several weeks ago, he underwent a surgical procedure to correct a degenerated vertebra that was eaten away by the cancer. In an effort to maintain his mobility, an interbody spine cage was implanted in the t-1 section to compensate for the lost vertebra. He has since developed a serious infection at the location of the 7 to 9inch-long incision and deep into the wound. Apparently, the infection is growing on the rods of the cage. As a result, he is bedridden in a rehab clinic and unable to enjoy life.
He is on massive doses of antibiotics but the infection is not responding to the treatment. It?s uncertain as to the cause of the infection. Radiation or the surgery itself may be the culprit.
Might anyone out there have knowledge of this problem? Is there any treatment he should try? Understandably, he wishes to get back on his feet and derive some enjoyment from the time ha has left. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. |

Dear J,
I am sorry that I do not have any answers for you. I wanted you to know that I am thinking about you and hoping for the best. I posted a while back and have received a lot of veiws but no one has replied to me, I didn't want that to happen to you!
ANyway, it sure seems crazy that the infection can overtake one like that. As if your friend didn't already have enough to fight!
Best of luck to you and your friend,
Lucy |

Well, I can try to help I feel sorry for your friend. When you have a foreign body in your body that becomes infected, often the only way to cure it is to remove the infected prosthesis. In case of bones it is even more important, since bones have a poor blood supply, and the antibiotics have a hard time to get there in adequate concentrations.
Your friend may be in such a condition that the doctors no longer feel that it is safe for him to undergo another procedure. Plus that might cause his spine to be unstable and potentially make things worse. I don't know enough about his history, but it sure sounds like there are few options. I wish I had better news, but this is a really difficult situation...
yours sincerely
