Hello,
I am new to this group. My mother was informed this week that she has breast cancer. She goes to the specialist Monday. We was told that she would be haing surgery and radiation. I need to know what to expect with this cancer, surgery and radiation. Thank you!
Christy

Hi, Christy,
I am sorry to hear about your mother's recent diagnosis. My mother (who is now 75) had breast cancer in 1994, modified mastectomy of left breast (no lymph involvement) and then 8 rounds of chemo and radiation. We are so blessed that she is still cancer free almost 13 years later.

Will you be going with her to the specialist? If you are able, it is more effective for your own benefit, and your mom's, to take written questions and write answers down. At those appointments, so much information gets thrown out, it might be hard to remember it all.

Stay strong and keep posting to this forum. It is a great place where you will meet so many people who are going through, or have gone through, what you are. If you have questions related to your mom's specific type of breast cancer, there is also on this site (as you are probably aware) a list devoted solely to breast cancer. There you might find folks who are going through the same type of treatment for the same type of breast cancer your mother has. Everyone responds differently to chemo and radiation and they have excellent medications to help patients tolerate some of the side-effects so commonly portrayed in films and tv shows.

My best to you, your mother, and your family
Jessica

Hello there Christy, I hope you could be strong for your mom as she needs you to be in this time of crisis. Just be there with her and support her in any way you can. Just bear in mind that not all procedures can be beneficial to her, but I do know that the specialists know what they are doing.
