I recently participated in a free prostate screening. This screening offered a PSA test as well as a DRE exam. The doctor volunteering for this day was a colon/rectal surgeon. He reported my DRE exam as "suspicious." I immediately made an appointment with a urologist with impecable credentials.

In the three weeks I was waiting, I got the PSA results which were 0.3 for total PSA and 0.2 for complex PSA. These readings are doubled for the true numbers as I take propecia.

For these three weeks, I did not sleep much, and while active, could not shake concern.

I met with the urologist this AM and upon a physical DRE he stated my prostate was not very suspicious. He said I am fine.

Upon further conversation he made some comments similar to the books I have been reading. While the colon/rectal surgeon is highly educated and competent, he does not feel many prostates. Prostate examination is a developed skill requiring significant experience to determine the subtle differences if the prostate is not actually normal.

So if your doctor refers you due to an abnormal DRE to an expert like a urologist, there is still hope everything is OK.

For me, the urologist and I have mutually agreed to a follow up rectal ultrasound of the prostate just to cover all bets.

If you are waiting to see the expert urologist, relax as much as you can. You just might hear great news.

I thought SOMEBODY would reply to this post.

In late August, the urologist did a transrectal ultrasound. There was no cancer. They did find some stones or calcifications called caculi. These were explained to me as insignificant, unrelated to diet, and meaningless. Those that get an abnormal DRE, there is still a decent chance you will be OK. Get the transrectal ultrasound. It is easy, fast, and really nothing to go thru.

Hi,

I have had 3 transrectal ultrasound scans and I agree with you that they are nothing to worry about. Anyone waiting for one should not be afraid.
