Hello all, Please help I'm frantic. My mother just got out of the hosp after 6 days. No diagnosis yet. They did every test including bone marrow biopsy. She has to go to Drs office Thursday. I live 1500 miles from her and she insists I don't come up. I'm afraid she has Leukemia and she's no way ready to hear that. Heres what I know, I would so appreciate any input you can offer. I believe her bone marrow is failing, here's the CBC info"
WBC 4.9 RBC 2.54, HGB 9.9, MCV 113.6, MCH 39.3, MCHC 34.5, RDW 22.3, Platelets 45,000 (2 days after transfusion), I have the other counts, but you get the picture. I know most people associate Leukemia with an increase in WBC's, but in advanced leukemia it's quite the opposite. Please tell me what you think, I'm beside myself with worry. Does anyone know of anything else that would cause such a low CBC? Thank you for your response. Kathy |

| I forgot to mention in my above post: My mother is 77 (looks 60), never sick except for the occassional cold. What prompted her to see the Dr was a hemmorhoid that was bleeding (six months), and recently a bloody nose. Does it usually take ten days to two weeks to find out if its leukemia? I'm getting more frantic by the day. Oh and I forgot to mention the Dr put her on prednisone 20mg 3X a day. Please, I'm begging for a response. Thanks Kathy |

Hello
All that can be seen is that she is anemic and her platelets are low. This can be indeed a sign of leukemia, but without knowing the full picture it is impossible to figure out what is going on. I am glad she is being evaluated and had a bone marrow biopsy.
best regards,

Had any news yet?
All I know that between the time I'd been to the doctor and knew for sure it was leukemia, there was about 10 days.
They said it most likely would be leukemia a little bit earlier.
It's advanced leukemia, i don't know if there's a difference between advanced and in early stadia cancer. Then again I'm 17 wich is quite a bit younger. So there may be differences.
But as i said, had any news yet?

There are also diseases of the blood like myloproliferitive disorder, leukemia being one of them but also others. Have you heard anything yet?
