Hi,
My mom(61, non-smoker/non-drinker & vegetarian) was diagnosed with Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the 2/3rd Anterior Tongue(Oral Tongue) on the left side in Jan this year. Some Histopathology Report info:

Grade: Well Differentiated
Size: 1.2 x 0.8 x 0.7(thickness) cm
Depth of Invasion: Muscle Layer
Lymph Nodes: negative, though were resected

In Feb she had Partial Glossectomy + Supra-omohyoid Neck Dissection surgery to remove the tumor. No Radiotherapy/Chemotherapy was done. Subsequently she recuperated and started leading a normal life as earlier and our family was also relieved that the cancer was picked-up early and treated.

But our relief was short-lived as the cancer recurred in the neck lymph nodes-right side after just 6 months ie in Aug. And it has been removed by Radical Neck Dissection. This time her report reads - "Extensive Recurrent Squamous Cell Carcinoma involving Neck Fibrofatty Tissue, Sterocludomastoid Muscle, surrounding common Carotid Artery and metastasis to 9/11 Lymph Nodes. Extensive vascular permeation is present."

The Dr says that he'll discuss her case with a medical board to decide further treatment which might include radiotherapy or chemotherapy or both. After going thru lots of websites I have found out that there are many potentially dangerous side-effects of chemo.

Now what I wanna know is that can the disease be fought with radiotherapy alone? The Dr says that this time it was between stage II & III.

Thanks in advance,
RS
