I have a palpable lump (3 o'clock left breast) and the report reads, "axillary tails reveal benign appearing lymph node" on the left side. What does that mean?
Also the impression: benign findings (Birads category 2). Can you explain this term to me?

Thank you
Jane

Hi Jane,

Here is some information on the birads:

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has established the Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System (BI-RADS?) to guide the breast cancer diagnostic routine. Radiologists sometimes refer to each BI-RADS? category as a "level."

BI-RADS? Assessment Categories

Category 0 Need Additional Imaging Evaluation
Category 1 Negative
Category 2 Benign Finding
Category 3 Probably Benign Finding ? Short Interval Follow-Up Suggested
Category 4 Suspicious Abnormality ? Biopsy Should Be Considered
Category 5 Highly Suggestive of Malignancy ? Appropriate Action Should Be Taken

Category 0 is a temporary category that means additional imaging is needed before assigning a permanent BI-RADS? assessment category. Most category 0 findings are shown to be benign after the additional imaging is completed.

The BI-RADS? categories or levels are used to standardize interpretation of mammograms among radiologists. They are useful for statistical analysis of mammography practice and BI-RADS? results are compiled on a nationwide basis in the U.S. to help refine mammography procedures everywhere.

Hope this helps,

Margie

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Of coarse the physician didn't explain the medical terms with me. Benign should have been enough, but the report left me with questions. I am so grateful for this forum and those who take the time to care.
Thank you Margie!
