Recommended Book

Just wanted to recommend a book given to me by a dear friend who didn't know what to do for me or give me when I was first diagnosed. You've heard of all the help books such as Computers for Dummies? This book is "Breast Cancer for Dummies" I got it along with a note that said, "I realize your anything but a dummy but this will help answer any questions you have, or help you to know what questions to ask the doctor". The doctor always asks "do you have any questions". Well if I knew what questions to ask I would ask them! I don't know what I would have done without this. It takes you from diagnosis, to pathology reports, to emotional help. A great book for anyone to understand what we are all going throough.

Also wanted to add that the book "Breast Cancer for Dummies" also includes information on all available treatments options, side effects, a good section on lymphodema, what to expect after treatments, questions to ask your cancer center to be sure they are certified (certified cancer centers have a higher rate of recovery than non-certified), what your oncologist should provide you at consultation, etc. You can get it at most major book stores.

Thanks for the reccomendation, Marion. There are a lot of BC books out there, and it is always nice to know when someone has found one that is helpful. Having suggested questions sounds really helpful. I never know what to ask, either. Dr. Susan Love has a terrific book on breast health, too. Another excellent book for when treatment is over is "After Breast Cancer" by Hester Hill Schnipper, who is an oncology social worker. She also survived breast cancer and her husband is a medical oncologist. Among other things, she also tackles the subject of depression, which many women experience when treatment ends.

I checked it out of the libray and read it twice before I returned it.

Hi All,
While we are on the subject of good books. Many of you know that this is such a life altering experience and that many of us suffer from what we call "canceritis" you know when you big toe starts to hurt and the first thing that you think of is, can this come back in my toe? Smile

Well hopefully you are not all like me I know that there are alot of us out here, LOL.. anyways, an excellent book that I read that helps put that "waiting for the other shoe to drop " feeling a little more at ease is a book called "Dancing in Limbo: making sense of life after cancer" I do not recall the authors names and have given out my last copy. But it is a great book and I have used it for gifts for some of my friends who have gone through this too. I have also used that Dr. Love book as gifts for others and suggested it to many... my breast bible when I was first diagnosed. Another good book is Living beyond breast cancer.. by Dr. Weiss. She also has a web site which you can get on her mailing list and get great information. She is outside of the philadelphia area and I had a friend who was her patient. She a a great advocate for breast cancer. I think that I will pick up that breast cancer for dummies book on your recommendation... thanks!

I also have read many books sence the day last Dec 18th 03 hit me.
I have Read and Read, But the book I like the best is, Why I wore Lipstick to my Mastectomy..It just hit me so hard, I remember putting on alittle makeup to go and have my Mastectomy done.
So yes read that one you will like it..

Tammy, I am glad to see you here... things have been hectic around here, dont remember if I told you about everything. Right now I am going through lots of tests to figure out what the pain is in my back.. but the PET scan came back negative for cancer... Yehaaaaa! It is really hard some time to remember that not everything is this crap coming back. But I do think of you often and I am happy that you found this forum as that this is a great forum and Dr. Leo is actually going to be going to your part of the woods.. chicago in january. You know that I show up there every once in a while Smile

Yes, I do believe this is a pretty kool place to be..
I do think you will be seeing alot of me here.
I have been doing pretty well and it is almost my One Yr Ann on the 18th of Dec so I am kinda in a state, But don't know why??
So I will be looking for a whole lot of support i'm sure.

The 1st year anniversary comes around alot quicker then it seems when you're going through treatment and is the most emotional. Just remember, the longer you go and hang with NED, the odds get better, so you're off to a great start.
I go on the 9th to get this cast thingy off my arm from surgery last week, so I won't be on much. Still hurts but nothing like the 1st 24 hours, but it's ackward to type too.
I've been trying to find all the pictures I got of Kim when she was down visiting and we went to Talladega for Dave, her husband. I think we're all pretty much still in shock.
Take care and congrats on 1 year hanging with NED that's right around the corner.
