My father, 72, who is healthy and physically active has been recently (2 months ago) diagnosed with PC. He has had no symptoms other than moderately frequent need for urination. He had a PSA reading of 12.1 a year ago, prostate was enlarged (90 gr) however no rough spots on digital rectal exam. 12 point Biopsy was done two months ago resulted in Gleason 3+3 with PSA 13.2. Doctor ordered a bone scan and MR. Bone scan was positive for metasnasis around pelvic bone. following x ray showed no damage-weakening of the bone. Doctor started hormone therapy (one injection and daily pills). He will have PSA test in july and we are anxhiously waiting for the results...Whole family was shocked and we are hoping for the best..Of course the question is how fast can this cancer spread? What is the risk of it spreading to vital organs and threatening his life? Would radiation therapy combined with hormones produce better results in terms of life expectancy and quality?? _________________ gozal |

Dear Gursel,
As you probably know, hormone therapy usually reduces the spread and PSA, however there are some implications short term (reaction to some medications & side effects) and long term ( medication can become less effective over time and potential osteoporosis)
Some of these problems can be prevented or helped:
We can improve quality of life and reduce side effects in a number of ways: some medications are tolerated better than others and lifestyle is very important, with physical activity, diet, supplements having a large influence.
Have found a very good book is "Prostate Cancer prevention and cure" by Lee Nelson. He covers a lot of these subjects. He has used hormone therapy, various medications and supplements himself.
Also suggest the website www.yananow.com
Look at "mentors experiences" where a number of people outline their story. There are a lot there who have used hormone therapy of various periods of months to years.
They will not mind if you contact them with any specific questions.
Regards,
John |

Dear Gursel,
Myself has PSA 12, gleason 3+3 but stage T1 cancer, bone scan showed negative. Discovered during a TURP prostatectomy.
What I'm trying to share is that prostate cancer works very differently on different people.
I'm rather surprised that a low gleason 3+3 could actually metastasis. Was there a second opinion? I hope it is early metastatis, and from what I know hormone treatment or radiation could prevent or slow down the cancer spread. But, again treatment results are different from people to people. Remaining positive is one important factor.
I hope the treatment for your dad works. _________________ jack |

Dear Jack, Jon, many thanks for your replies.
In first week of july my dad will have a new psa test and will see the doctor to see if hormone tratment lowers the score. So far the daily pills produced no serious side effects. Doctor had mentioned that a new bone scan may be ordered several months later during the treatment.
We all hope for the best. _________________ gozal |
