For quite a while now my eyes have been feeling really dry and sore.
I attributed it to my laser correction in May but now I'm starting to wonder if that and the joint pain in my extremities could be related to Fosamax. I take 70 mg once a week. Till now I've also been atributing
my arthritic like pain to the Femara. as well as my elevated liver enzymes
for which I've been scanned and ultrasounded---Negative.

The only side effects I knew about were gastrointestinal. Are there other things we should be aware of with this drug. Can it affect the kidneys?
I've googled this but can't come up with anything beyond GI symptoms.

What a great thing you are undertaking. Thankyou so much.

I've taken Fosomax for several years without the kind of discomfort you describe. I started with the 10 mg daily tablets and switched to 70 mg once a week about 2 yrs ago. I have not had any trouble with it. But, everyone is different and unlisted side effects can show up. You might ask your pharmacist about it. I think there are some good products on the market for the dry eyes. My DH has a slightly dry eye following cataract surgery, and the doctor perscribed something. Cheers for the negative scan on the liver. That must have been a relief. Lauri

Hi,

Sorry you are having so many problems.

Regarding fosamax - I take 70 mg. once a week and I have never had one single side effect. I would be quite surprised to discover that fosamax was causing your problems.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi,
If you look a little further, you'll find that muscle/joint pain and eye problems really are some of the side effects of fosamax. I think the eye problems are called uvitis. Not everyone gets those problems of course, but they are included on the list of possibles.

Hi

I don't think fosamax could be causing your ocular problems. Uveitis is actually a dangerous condition, an inflammation inside the eye, affecting the uvea. It would cause red eye, tender, and vision problems. But I would check with your opthalmologist and be seen, since it sounds like you are having a problem...

regards
Leo

hi saluki! - i am on fosamax too and it didn't occur to me that the medication was giving me any problems; it's been relatively smooth sailing for over a year on it. however, i suddenly have arthritis in my hands.... and my eyes have been so unbelievably dry for months that i have had to use drops. unlike you, i am not on arimidex nor had any corrective eye surgery. it never occurred to me that the fosamax could possibly cause that...i had no idea these could be side affects. makes you wonder....

Hi Denisa
Didn't even occur to me you were on this. So, I looked into it a little more . this is refering to what was printed in the New England Journal of medicine last March.

Osteopororis Drugs Tied to Eye Problems
Rare but troubling woes reported with bisphosphonates

WEDNESDAY, March 19 (HealthScoutNews) -- A class of osteoporosis drugs has been found to cause several eye problems, some of them serious, and researchers say patients should discontinue the medication if they experience any ocular woes.

The drugs, called bisphosphonates, help prevent fractures by slowing down bone loss. The cases of eye problems are rare, says a research letter appearing in the March 20 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine . But they're also surprising, since physician's guides don't list them as a potential side effect.

Bisphosphonates are sold in the United States under the names Fosamax, Actonel, Zometa, Didronel, and Skelid. Ophthalmologists at the Casey Eye Institute, affiliated with the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, found ocular problems with each one.

The problems include conjunctivitis, abnormal or blurred vision, eye pain, scleritis (an inflammation of the sclera, the outer coating of the eyeball), and uveitis (an inflammation of the uvea, a middle lining that includes the iris). Some of the people taking the drugs experienced more than one of these symptoms, the letter says.

It is the first time any class of drug has caused scleritis, report the researchers, Drs. Frederick W. Fraunfelder and Frederick T. Fraunfelder. The conjunctivitis problems eased as the patients' bodies got more accustomed to the drugs. However, some of the problems didn't abate until the patient stopped taking the drugs altogether, they write.

I asked my onco Monday about getting on the meds to try and help the bone/joint pain from Arimidex. He told me that sometimes it actually makes the pain worse, so I guess like everything concerning this disease, it affects everyone different. I had a bone density on Monday and I'll wait and see what the results are. I'd be willing to give it a try and see if it helped. I'd like to feel 45 instead of 145 most days.
