Specifically, is flatulence a symptom of ovarian cancer? What else is? Is it closely related to breast cancer?

Hello
The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be very variable. Abdominal fullness, mass, back pain, urinary symptoms. But I think flatulence would be unlikely, though not impossible.

Hi, I'm butting in here to see if I can help with the second part of your question.
I am a participant in a clinical trial called the Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Study. One of the requirements for this study is that at least one family member must have had breast cancer and have been premenopausal at the time. The study involves genetic relationships between those who have had bc and have more likelihood for having ovarian cancer. It also involves having annual transvaginal ultrasounds as well as quarterly blood draws in the hope of finding better ways to detect ovarian cancer in those who are most likely to end up with it.

Hi all...I have a sister who is experiencing severe abdominal pain for about 3 months now. She has had alot of tests done...nothing shows up. The last hospital she was in finally told her she needed to see a gynecologist ASAP. She has lost alot of weight, which she really needed to do...but she lost it really fast. She is also diabetic. I am so concerned about her....I had breast cancer 4 years ago.
I'm hoping and praying to hear good news from her this week as soon as she gets in to see the GYN.  |

Hi AlaskaAngel...thank you so much for asking about my sister. She saw her gynecologist and tests showed no female problems. As we speak, she is back at Duke Hospital. She went there first to see if they could find the source of her pain. They said it sounded like a female problem. She is back at Duke today because they called her a few weeks ago and said they found some clots in her veins and arteries. I am so confused with her condition, I don't know what to think. I am waiting for her husband to call me with some news. She lives in Georgia, but has been making trips here to North Carolina.
Hopefully, I will know more today. I will let you know. Thanks again for your concern. |

A rather difficult way to spend the last 3 months, not to mention Christmas. My sister and I are over a 1,000 miles apart and it is hard when things happen to each other. She used her vacation time to come up here to stand by with my husband when I started chemotherapy in 2002... I hope her visit to Duke provides some clues into what is going on for you both. In the meantime, thanks for your return post.

 Hi AlaskaAngel....just got off the phone with my sister...she and her husband are on their way back to Georgia. She had MRI done of abdominal area yesterday. Showed everthing ok?????? He wants her back at Duke in 3 weeks for colonoscopy and endoscopy. I have lost count on the number of tests she has had...I know of 2 colonoscopies she has had in the past 3 months. This will be the first one done at Duke Hospital. I'm getting so frustrated for her I don't know what to do!!!! She and her husband are beyond frustration. On top of everything, they both came down with really bad colds while here for Christmas. I told her to go home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and try to get over this cold right now..last thing she needs is for her immune system to be down. She also said the doctor at Duke told her " he was going to find out what is going on with her". Famous last words!!! I just don't know anymore.

There was no history of BC in family...guess it has to start somewhere. |

Holy Schomolly, Claisy. I had just ONE colonoscopy right after finishing treatment and I definitely sympathize with your sister... If it were my little sis it would be awful hard to know WHAT to say.

| He is a gastroenterologist. She really likes him. I know that means alot, but I also know you need somebody that knows what they are talking about!!!! I went to the Duke site and looked him up. I found a little info on him. That was at www.dukehealth.org His name is Dr. Muir. Duke really has a good reputation around here for being a great hospital, although they have been in the news lately for some bad things. But, I think every hospital has its horror stories as well as its wonderful stories. You have to trust somebody. I would definitely go there. In fact, my surgeries were done here in Raleigh at a Duke affiliated hospital. I had the best of care. |

Well, that all sounds pretty good.
And you are sure the previous studies were colonoscopies and not by chance flexible sigmoidoscopies?? Sometimes people get the two confused... I am just trying to figure out why she already had to repeat the first one in less than 3 months if each one definitely was a colonoscopy.
Sometimes a colonoscopy is repeated if for some reason the doc was unable to get very far into the colon (for example if the patient's prep to clear the colon wasn't very effective), or if there happened by bad luck to be some type of equipment failure or procedure interruption...
It might help to get the actual reports for the 2 that were done earlier to find out for yourself, as I'd want more explanation as to why a specialist would want one done again so soon... Is it being done just because the doc she likes doesn't have confidence in the ones recently done (were those two colonoscopies also done by a gastroenterologist, or were they done by an internist, or ?)
Is her insurance company willing to pay for a third colonoscopy in only 3 months, on top of all of the other testing she has had?

| Flatulence is most certainly a symptom of ovarian cancer, as I have discovered myself, for which my doctor tried to be fobbed off with tablets irritable bowel, along with several lots of antibotics for 'water infections'. However the 16cm tumour removed along with my left ovary proved otherwise! |
