hi there all,
my name is clairelou and i am 24 years old, i live in the uk, in yorkshire.
2 months ago i had a mole removed from the back of my right calf, i thought nothing of it really, i always use sun protection with a high uva and uvb protection, i never use sunbeds etc..... i considered myself to be sensible when it came to looking after my skin,
my results came back 3 weeks ago and i was diagnosed with having malignant melanoma, i am laid up in bed at present after having surgery yesterday, i had a further excision and biopsy, they have removed a significant proportion of skin and underlying tissue from my calf, in theatre i was seen by a plastic surgeon so they have done a wonderful job considering the amount that has been removed.
i just thought i would introduce myself to you all x x
with love and best wishes

Welcome, Clairelou.
Thank you for sharing your story. You will find others have had similar experiences with skin cancers. The Sun is only one factor in causing skin cancer. It does sound like you are getting great health care. Keep us informed of your progress. _________________ Jim

Hi Clairelou,
Welcome. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in December 2002. I had it excised and go in every 6 months for a check up with my dermatologist. Did your doctor tell you what stage your melanoma is? It sounds like you caught it early. I grew up a beach baby and got sunburned often. I'm fair skinned with light hair and eyes, so I'm extra careful now that I know I'm especially at risk. Good luck to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

thank you all for the welcome x
my melonoma is a 1.2mm, they seem verey optomistic and fingers crossed all will be okay
i cannot fault the care i have received in the bradford nhs trust, i have an allocated cancer nurse, i am seeing a counsellor and therapist at bradford cancer support, my first surgery was done by a cancer specialist and my second surgery included a plastic surgeon so i am over the moon with what they have done for me
all in all this whole experience has been made so much easier by the competent and caring professionals who have dealt with me on this journey x x
love
