Hello everyone!

This is my first visit to this forum!
So here is a short intro of me: I've just turned 16 and I am a male Wink I'd rather not tell my name but you can call me R.

2 days ago I discovered a bleeding mole. It was on a rather weird spot, way up my legs but it was still on my legs. I've had an itch on that mole before (several times in the last year), but I didn't pay much attention to it. Untill 2 days ago when it suddenly started to hurt. It was like something stung me or something, but there was nothing sharp near the mole and nor had anything sharp been there before. It was just a spontaneous stinging-feel and when I looked I saw it was bleeding. It hurt all day long and still a little when I touch it now. When it was bleeding, the pain of touching it was so bad that I went crazy when my mother touched it to check out what it was. Walking also hurted.

I contacted my doctor and they will remove it next week and then see if it is anything serious.

My question is what could it be? Could it be something innocent? What kind of cancer could it be if it isn't 'innocent'? Are there any symptioms that I can check as soon as possible to see if I might have cancer?
Just for the info I didn't scratch it and it hadn't been touched by any other sharp objects or anything in that direction. And another thing, I also lost a lot of weight over the last year. My doctor said it was normal for someone who is my age (16), but I thought it was weird, I mean I grew 10 cm and I lost 10 kilo's. I'm hardly ever really hungry, I don't eat a lot the first 2 meals and sometimes I have such a lack of appitite that I skip them without really feeling hungry.

Oh and another question (seems like I can't stop editing this post), but does removing a mole hurt? They are going to remove some 'healthy' flesh around it too and then stitch it.

Thanks if you could help!

R.

Dear R,

No, removing the mole is not going to hurt. Doctor will give you a local anaesthetic. You will feel the pinprick from the little needle. If you feel anything when he gently starts he will give you a little more anaesthetic until you don't feel anything. You are right - the doctor will remove the mole and a little healthy tissue round about it and send it to the lab who will report back to the doctor. I know you are concerned about what could it be. Your doctor is doing the correct thing in cutting it out and sending to lab for examination. You have to wait. And don't worry about the stitches - taking them out doesn't hurt at all.

You say you lack appetite. Perhaps that's what is causing weight loss. But why do you lack appetite? Ask your doctor.

Try to be completely honest with your doctor and tell him/her everything that is not quite right. Patients often don't tell doctors all the little things because patient thinks its not important or they are afraid doctor will think them 'peculiar' or patient is waiting for the doctor to ask the right question. Patients will often be on the way out of the doctor's office, hand on the doorknob, and then say " oh, also -------. This 'also' piece of information is often the most important of the consultation. On the other hand doctor might say "I can't find anything wrong" when the patient knows there IS something wrong. In this case you have to be persistent. A good doctor will do a reassessment.

So before going to see doctor write down all the things you should tell him.
Write down all the questions you want to ask. If you can, write down key words of doctor's reply so that you can remember what he said. It is good if you can take someone with you - in your case your mother, because another pair of ears makes doubly sure that everything is covered and remembered.

All best wishes. Let us know what the result is.

Val

Hi Mousa,

Thank you for responding!
The mole was removed today, they are sending it somewhere to investigate it, but my doctor says he thinks it is probably just a good mole. Still it was removed and I'm relieved. Of course we will have to wait for the results to be 100% sure.

And you were right, removing it was a lot less painfull than I thought.

When I get to results, which will be in 2 weeks I will let you know!

Dear R.

Glad to hear that mole removal went well. I always wonder why biopsies can take 2 weeks. I guess there are so many of them. See you in 2 weeks.

Best regards,

Val

It is not the number of biopsies that make it take 2 weeks but the specific type of biopsy analysis. In most cases, it is not simply a matter of putting a piece of the tumor under a microscope and looking. Often, there are multiple steps to the process. Step 1 takes 1 day, step 2 take 3 days.... before you know it, 2 weeks have past. Rarely does a biopsy sample just sit around waiting for someone to attend to it. But from our perspective, the patients perspective, those 2 weeks can seem like an eternity.

Dear Jim,

Thank you for explanation. I was looking back 36 years (!) when a patient with suspected breast cancer would be on the operating table. Surgeon would take a sample and send to lab and we would wait, maybe 20 minutes or so, until result came back to know whether or not to remove breast. I'm sure that's what happened! Confused

Regards,

Val

Hi again,

I got the report today. There were a few irritated cells in the mole. My docter says it is nothing serious but I'm going to let a dermatologist (did I spell that right?) look at it.

Oh and the stitches were one big disaster. They let go after a few days! After that the wound...I don't know how to say it in english but the wound kind of grew weird. 'Wild Flesh' is what we would call it here. I had that removed today...

So I didn't have a lot of luck but I'm glad when it's all over.

Hello again,
Glad to hear they didn't find anything serious but sensible to have a dermatologist look at it. Let us know what that doctor says.
Bye for now.

Hi again,

I have this weird new 'issue' with my skin Confused

It turned purple (a bit blue) with these (a bit raised) pink 'places' all over my legs!

What could this mean??

A quick response would be very appreciated.

I'm sorry, I have absolutely no idea. You will have to go ask the doctor.

You know, God gave us doctors to go to with all our illnesses, so the way to stop worrying is to go see one of them.

Let us know what the doctor says.
