Dear Forum members,
Please help with information if you can.
My friend's daughter-in-law who is a young mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in July 2005. She was operated on and it was all removed. The consultant kept checking her for next six months and then gave her clearance. Now she has a lump in lymphs in her neck. Consultant says that she should keep an eye on it for 6 months.
Does this sound reasonable? I think a second opinion is needed. What questions should she ask? What tests should be done?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi mousa,
I have no knowledge of thyroid cancer, but I know in my case had a biopsy been performed, it would had likely detected my cancer (endometrial cancer). I think given her history of cancer, it would be prudent to assess the lump, perhaps some sort of biopsy. I can only speculate with my limited knowledge, but should they not determine if the lump is benign, and rule the possiblity of cancer out-- rather than waiting 6 months? Maybe she should get a second opnion. Hope all turns out well, and keep us posted.

Hi Mousa,
I'm with Rhonda on this, and with your initial inclination to get a second opinion.
From my limited knowledge of thyroid cancer, I know that it (like many other cancers, I suppose) can recur. It can also be a fairly aggressive cancer.
Let's hope the doctor is competent, and there's nothing to worry about except to keep an eye on things. But I personally wouldn't be taking any chances. I'd get a second opinion if it was me. _________________ Jennefer Poultson

It is very common to "keep an eye on it" following treatment of any kind for any cancer. It is just the prudent thing to do. Not that anything is wrong or that the doctor expects the cancer to recurre. It is just wise to keep an eye on it. _________________ Jim

Some facts that you may want to consider about Thyroid cancer...
About one-third of all people will develop a tumor in the thyroid at some point during their lives. These can usually be felt as lumps on the throat since the thyroid is so close to the surface of the skin.
About seventeen-thousand cases of thyroid cancer are discovered each year, about two-thirds of which are in women. Most forms of alignant thyroid tumors are curable...so take early precaution. _________________ Our monthly newsletter is read by over 60,000 people worldwide; shouldn’t you be one
