At beginning of July 2004 my husband, aged 65, after CAT scan, endoscopy, and barium swallow, underwent laparotomy and was diagnosed with advanced adenocarcinoma of the stomach (Linitus Plastica). The tumour had invaded up to the oesophogastric junction and there were numerous lymph nodes along celiac region as well as multiple perigastric lymph nodes. The surgeons closed after putting 5 clips at sites around the stomach (as markers for the radiologist in case my husband decided to have radiotherapy), a feeding tube into the jejunum, and gave him a few months to live. The surgeons had intended to do a complete gastrectomy together with whatever else needed to be removed. My husband had 10 intravenous chemos of Taxol, Cisplatin, and 5FU and is presently on Xeloda. At beginning of November 2005 PET scan showed no cancer. CAT done end of January 2006 showed stomach wall to be 5mm - down from 24mm at first CAT scan. He is well and steadily gaining weight. Only problem now is side effects of Xeloda. If anyone would like more info please just ask!

Hi I'm a new member as of today.

My husband is taking Xeloda as part of a 9 week ecx regime, I'd be grateful for any information on the types of side effects that your husband is experiencing and any advice you can offer. He only started the ECX last friday - so we're still not sure which of the drugs is leaving him so fatigued and fuzzy headed. Thanks

Dear Jenny,

You are all going to have a tough time for a while. Stay determined and positive and you will come through this.

If you google Xeloda you will find a list of clinical adverse events. Fatigue and fuzzy headedness are not mentioned. My husband has the diarrhea (mild) and the hand foot syndromes. Cisplatin is a horrible treatment. Epirubicin I have no knowledge of.

www.cancerbackup.org.uk seems to be a wonderful organisation and you can find information on ECX treatment. Use the search button to find ECX and you will see all the possible side effects and all the less common side effects. Also, cancerbackup have nurses who specialise in cancer who you can call and you will find help and support there.

My heart goes out to you and your husband and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. It is my belief that the mind and the soul have a strong influence in helping the body fight this uninvited and unwelcome visitor. First thing I did was to ask all the family, friends, and colleagues to send good thoughts and prayers. Next thing is for patient to forgive everyone who he thinks has done him wrong, and to forgive himself for anything he has done that still makes him uncomfortable to think off. Let it go. It’s in the past. Look on it as lessons learned and let it go.

I send you lots of love.

Val
