Hello there,

My dad was diagnosed three weeks ago with NSCLC Stage IV with brain mets and had 10 WBRT. He completed that last week. I am noticing he has increased unsteadiness, tiredness etc. He has not started chemo yet.
My question is that I have heard that radiation effects continue for some time after treatment ceases. Should I consider his increased unsteadiness etc related to radiation or more cancer issues?

Thanks!!
Debbie

Hi sealnomore. I am very sorry about your father's lung cancer. You are right; radiation keeps working for several weeks after the last treatment. You should make sure that his medical team if fully aware of his status change in order for them to decide whether to do other test, to start chemotherapy now, or wait for a while.

Your father is in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Seal,

Brainman's quite correct. The effects don't begin to show up until a few weeks after beginning radiation, so the timing is about right. This will affect him for a few more weeks, then he should start to rally. (Of course the chemo may knock him down in a different way.) Rads work for 4-6 weeks after it is stopped, depending on the number, but the side-effects should go away by then.

Also -- ditto Brainman again -- keep the docs posted.

Best wishes,
PBJ
