| My father just had his first PSA test and his score was over 700. He's in his 60s. I can't find much on PSA scores that are this high. How indicative is this of prostate cancer that has advanced? DRE revealed a mass on his prostate and ct scan showed a mass on this thyroid. Still waiting on other conclusive tests. Anyone experience PSA's this high and it was still confined to the prostate? or had it this high and had it be something else altogether besides cancer? |

M2O, I am very sorry about your father's health concerns. I have heard of PSA results higher than your father's but not too many. That is very high! Do you know if he ever had a PSA test done before? If so, do you know how high that one was and when the test was done?
PSA is a very specific test. Although there are some things that can cause a slight elevation of PSA, nothing but a test error comes to mind that could cause a test result that high  .
You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us informed.

| This was the first PSA test he's ever had, so unfortunately there is not anything to compare it to. A test error never occured to me, but its an interesting thought. I guess I was hoping BPH or Prostatitis might cause PSA's this high. I'm sure we'll know more after biopsy and pet scans this week. Is it pretty common to do a PET scan for prostate cancer? |

"A mild to moderate increase in PSA does not mean you have cancer...However a very high PSA is highly suggestive of a cancer...Though most men are diagnosed with a PSA level from 4 to 15, PSA can go into the hundreds and thousands. A reading at these higher levels almost always means you have advanced prostate cancer." --Sheldon Marks, "Prostate and Cancer", 2003 (Da Capo Press) pages 40-41.

He should be getting a biopsy soon which will provide a Gleason score and preliminary staging information. From there he can make treatment decisions with his medical team. *If he is diagnosed with advanced, systemic prostate cancer, he should consult with a good medical oncologist in addition to any other specialties he's seeing*.
Don't lose hope. With proper treatment and a bit of luck, men with advanced prostate cancer can live normal lives for years and years.

I suggest you read Dr Myers book, "Beating Prostate Cancer: Hormonal Therapy & Diet".
It has case studies of Dr Myers Patients with PSA readings of 1026, 3488, and 3656.
His publication is essential reading for anyone who might need to consider hormone treatment. |

My father aged 57 was diagnosed a month ago with his PSA value reaching 1024. This is an indication as far as i have been informed of an advanced prostate cancer. He had scans that all confirmed it was a metastatic cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes and the bones. He however feels no pain anymore as he is on hormone therapy. He started eating well again, as cancer had caused eating disorders, and he has even gone on vacation...
PC patients respond well to hormone therapy and have a good quality of life for two years. Beyond that... noone can tell. There are always exceptions. Just have a little faith. |
