night sweats - how do i know if it's significant?

Please somebody help me:

I have had HNL stage IIe and 6 cycles R-CHOP 14 - completed June 08. After that my tests showed a "bump" left in my small bowel at the site where my tumour had been. It biopsied clear and my PET scan was clear but I have been told to be watch for symptoms like night sweats, etc.

I have just had a series of hot nights but not major....just waking up hot and pushing the covers off and I cool to normal in about an hour. Summer is coming here and the temp has risen to maybe 23C during the night so could that be the cause? If I take my temperature when I wake during the night will this help me me tell if it is a lymphoma related sweat?

Hi Maggie,

Welcome to the community. This isn't my area at all, but was your described treatment chemotherapy? I've heard from many women that chemo can send you into menopause and you know what that means.

I'd suggest following up with the doctor ASAP, as he told you to look out for this symptom. Hopefully it is something else, but best to get it checked out to know for sure.

Hi PBJ, Thank you for your reply. I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I have just had a PET scan set up for next week so that should resolve it for me. I doubt if it is what you suggest as I had a hysterectomy 16 years ago and have been through all that. I will let you know my result, fingers crossed.

Its terrible isn't it. I freak out over every rash and bump and sweat that I have.
I think all will be OK. Unless its a drenching sweat, one which leaves your night wear and sheets soaking, it's probably the weather. Do mention it to the Doc when you go for the results of the scan.

Thanks for this ChemoMan, I would love to hear more about your chemo and side effects. I have paraesthesia in feet and hands and tongue believe it or not! It's horrible. My finger nails are half detached so I have to wear surgical gloves a lot of the time and nail varnish to disguise my nails if I go anywhere.

I have other stuff to cope with also like being an almost bald 51 yr old female (have a nice wig now but it itches), living on my own and having to drive myself 475km round trip for every hospital visit. Sometimes I feel like giving up and going to bed, not getting up in the morning.

Am I normal or mad? Can anybody tell me?

Maggie,

Definitely "normal" and I wasn't the patient! Cancer is an overwhelming experience both physically and mentally. That's why these forums are so good. We do have a section of coping and support if you wish to vent there a little as it might be seen by more people.

I wondered if you had already gone through menopause, but thought I'd toss that out there as a possibility. I'm the same age as you, but went through premature menopause in my mid-30's.

Glad to hear you are staying on top of this and you'll be getting a scan.
