My mother had brain surgery about a month ago for a brain inflammation but it seems that her post operative problems are not ending. I must inform you that she has been a patient of artheritis for 15 years and has been taking asteroids.

Now after surgery she was also given some asteroid treatment. She has swelling on her body especially on her face, hands and legs. Swelling on her hands and legs may also be due to arthiritis, may be. But her ALT (SGPT) value is 127 (normal range: 0-49). What could possibly be the reason. Has it anything to do with the post operative medication. She has been taking medicines for brain TB and seizure control.

Hi caprits, I am very sorry about your mother's continued health problems. All of the started after her surgery to remove the glioma? The brain like any other organ does get bruised when hurt. Surgery does the "hurting". The problem is that the brain is in a box with no where to swell. It is not uncommon for patients who have had brain surgery to need steroids. The problem is that the taking of steroids for a long time comes with its own set of problems. Your mother has already been taking steroids for her arthritis.

I am not sure if this is the cause of her other swellings or not and I do not know what ALT is. Therefore, the only advice I can give you is to keep working with her medical team to try to find the best balance of treatments for your mother.

Your mother continues to be in my thoughts and prayers.
