Hi,
I have an appointment scheduled to see a doctor, but I'm trying to ease my fears in the meantime.
I have a swollen lump with is painful to touch just under one breast and another one on the other side which I can't see, but I can feel it sometimes. I hear that in many cases if it's painful it's not cancerous but until I get the results of the tests I'm gonna be worried. Can anyone give me some enlightenment? Thank you.

Hi,

It's only natural to be worried. It seems everytime we turn around we're hearing of someone else being dx with cancer.

A swollen lymph node could be from an infection BUT you are doing the smart thing by going to the doctor. Most of the time, the lump associated with breast cancer in the breast isn't painful, but mine was a little sore and I've heard from other ladies other the years that said theirs were painful. With this disease, there is no set of rules that it plays by. Family hx only accounts for 10-15% of all breast cancers. I had no family hx. 75% of lumps are B9, but the only good lump is one that's in a jar and that has been checked with pathology. Too many doctors still want us to "watch and wait". Mammograms are great tests, but they miss 45% of all BC in women under 50 and 35% of women over 50. That's why it's so important to have mammograms and to do Self Breast Exams.

When is your appt? Know that you're in my prayers and just don't let the doctor blow you off. There are great doctors around and there are some who still don't understand that cancer knows no age limits, family history and doesn't really care if you're in excellent health or not........ it's a cruel disease, BUT the earlier it's caught, the easier to treat and the better prognosis.

Keep us posted.

Just to add a few details, I'm 24 and I'll be getting an ultrasound, they said that they don't do mammograms at my age. Will they be able to tell me during the ultrasound what it might be or will I have to wait for results?

The doctor who I'll be seing is just giving me a script to get the ultrasound, I intend to ask her, however, as much as I can about what she thinks it might be and hopefully I can take her word for it.

The only thing an ultra sound can do is show if there is something there. It can NOT tell if it's B9 or malignant. I was told my ultra sound showed a B9 cyst.......... It ended up being a 5.5 cm malignant tumor.

The only way to be 100% sure if something is B9 or not is to do a biopsy.
