I'm a little scared right now. I'm 46 years old. After 3 years without any period, not even spotting, I started bleeding 3 days ago. It looked and felt like a regular period. Had blood work done as well as a vaginal ultrasound. Doctor says I am definetely in menopause, that my lining is a bit thick and so they want to do a endrometrial biopsy to be on the safe side. The internet is great but it is also freaking me out. Seems that bleeding in menopause is a symptom of uterine cancer. How many menopausal women, have had bleeding but it didn't turn out to be cancer? Guess I am looking for reassurances. Thanks.

As a man I can only report on the few occurences of post-menopausal bleeding that have been mentioned to me - 5 to be precise.

1) According to my late mother, my late maternal grandmother would 'spot' at least once a year - sometimes twice - even into her 90's!
Her eventual cause of death was massive blood loss caused by a ruptured aneurism to her abdominal aorta.

2) My late mother also would show similar signs into her 80's - ?genetics?
She died from a combination of problems exacerbated by stomach cancer which metastasised into her lymphatic system.

3) My wife also experiences symptoms of vaginal bleeding a couple or three times per year even though she went into an early menopause which was officially 'finished' before she was 40 despite occasional hot flushes into her late 50's.
She is now 61 and is suffering from ovarian cancer with complications - almost certainly not related to the spotting.
She's still living and, God willing, will continue to do so for many years to come!

4) Her younger sister, who had her second child at the age of 40 and 16 years after the first, also still spots despite having gone through the menopause about 5 years later (she's now 57).
She's physically fine other than morbid obesity.

5) My mother-in-law also was known to 'show' well into her 60's and is now in her 80's.
Another one still alive and kicking Very Happy

Do you think there's a genetic trend here, or is it just normal?

Although you very likely have nothing to worry about you have done the right thing in contacting your GP for tests, which should allay any fears you might have Very Happy
Good Luck Exclamation

Ps. There appears to be a link between ovarian problems and (possible) excessive use of talc in the vaginal area as there is a preponderance of talc particles found embedded in excised ovarian cancers, tumours and cysts as reported by surgeons in the UK and US.
