Does anyone know the major difference(s)? I had my biopsy yesterday and I dont get my results until 12/27, so I am going stir crazy.

In viewing photos online, the lesion on my back strongly resembles pics I have found of both superficial spreading melanoma and also superficial spreading basal cell. Any help would be soo greatly welcomed =)

Hi
Unfortunately the only real way to tell what a lesion is, is by biopsy. I know waiting for the results are horrendous and i sympathise with you having to deal with this over the holiday season.

However, its a good idea to focus on the positive aspects - most likely this lesion isnt going to kill you. Basal cell cancer affects over 1/3 of the population over their lifetime, and very rarely metasizes. Melanoma, particularly the superficial spreading variety caught in the early stages is 100% curable - yes that is 100%. Melanoma in situ hasnt penetrated below the very outer layer of skin and therefore cannot spread anywhere else. For most patients excision is the end of the story.

Unfortunately on forums and message boards many of the cases you hear of with melanoma are later stage advanced cancers and that scares many patients half to death. Try not to worry too much or read stuff on the internet, trust your care providers and you will be fine.
