My mom is getting ready to start chemoembolization next week. read some articles on it but still don't know what to expect. Is this going to extend her life or just make her more comfortable. Her cancer is just in the liver and has not spread but is on both lobes and is inoperable. The outlook in beginning was bleak then she was scheduled to see a suregeon who could perhaps take the one lobe but told her that he could not because it was in both lobes. Now I do not know what to expect and I am not close to home and have to rely on information from family members which are great but everyone is afraid to ask how long not that we expect an exact time frame just something. I cannot afford to go home right now but don't want to wait too long.

The life expectancy for Primary Liver Cancer is 3-6 months, max of 1 year. This is with no surgical, radiation, chemo, or transplant options. My mom was diagnosed in July of this year and she recently took 3 chemo treatments (clinical trial drug). This last week she was in the hospital for hepatic enchephalopathy. Her ammonia level was 4 times above normal. She went home today and we have set up hospice for her. The outlook at this point is quite poor.
Go see your mom. Spend as much time with her as you can. If you wait until later, until she becomes ill, she may become confused or disoriented and not know you. That is what my mother went through last week. We were fortunate enough that the doctors were able to correct the ammonia level and mom is now cognitive and does recognize us. PLEASE, don't wait until it is too late. I do understand financial situations, but your mom will not be around forever with the horrible diagnosis.
Good luck to you.

Thank you so much. I wanted to hear better news but the truth. Thank you, thank you. I want so much for her to have a year but need to realize that probably won't happen. May God bless you and yours.
