I am concerned that most patients are not aware of the
jaw bone loss side effect.

I have done some research on not only Zometa, but
Aredia and Fosamax side effects. These types of
drugs(bisphosphonates) have been linked to losing jaw
bone.
This side effect is called by many names, "Bis-phossy
jaw",, "Dead Jaw", "Jaw Necrosis, Osteonecrosis of
the jaw"

Cases have been reported since 2000 and yet it took
the drug company in late
2004 to admit that there is a link. The FDA has taken
Novartis(Zometa and Aredia) to task about
the delay and the methods used to inform the public.
Novartis says they have 875 reported cases to them
about people losing their jaw. Researchers believe
that this 875 number represents
only about 1 to 10 % of the people who have this jaw
condition from taking these drugs.

Now the warning is to have all your dental work before
you take these drugs
or don't have dental work at all while on the
drugs, and even then it can be risky

Here are many links that I found.

You can also go to Yahoo , MSN, or Google and search
for "Zometa Side Effects"

Hope this helps.

I found a good article on Fosamax and the link to ONJ at http://www.lawsuitsearch.com/news/drugs/fosamax_linked_to_jaw_disorder_sy.aspx. Good luck folks, and stay healthy.

I have forwarded this forum link to my sister who is suffering from MAJOR bone loss in her jaw and confirmed by her dentist. She is presently wondering how many other's are suffering with this problem as well and considering joining a national law suit. Thank you for the links you have provided. If any of you have any information that can help my sister move forward in this, please e-mail me and I will forward to her. OR IF YOU ARE READING THIS SIS...JOIN THE FORUM! Very Happy

Aren't you the funny one. It sure is not a laughing matter to those who suffer everyday from dead bone slivers just lifting out of their jaw or a hole that won't heal from an extracted tooth that now opens into the sinus cavity and causes liquid in the mouth to actually run out the nose; not to mention the constant battles with infection on an already depleated immune system from chemo treatments. This is what my sister faces everyday. Insensitive people (perhaps like you?) are most likely the reason Zometa is still available today.
