My husband recently had to have a blood transfusion due to low blood cell counts (hemoglobin 6.7) caused from the chemo treatments for his CLL. Is this common?

Hello
Very common. CLL can cause his blood counts to get low, and to correct this he may need red cell transfusions.

hi heather, i have cml and when my red blood/hemoglobin get low i take procrit shots.i personally don't ever want a blood transfusion if i can do something else. i don't trust them to be pure. if you have a drug plan your dr. can give you a prescription and you can give the shots to yourself/husband. you can also get them at the drs office but they are very expensive that way, as the dr gets a cut of the cost. there is another
medication you can take not sure of the spelling areseap(?). i took procrit once a week until my counts stablized. areseap i believe is every other week for effect. post and let me know if this approach works for your husband. good luck berryman |

Hi Berryman,
I have been out of town for a while visiting my husbands mother. He had to get a blood transfusion while we were there. What an ordeal trying to arange it between our Oncologist in Nevada and an Oncologist in Calif.
It took an entire day of phone calls back and forth. Your approach would have been alot easier. Thanks for the info. Heather |

Procrit is a drug that essentially makes the bone marrow produce more red cells. Very useful for people with renal failure on hemodialysis, because the kidney is no longer producing erythropoietin, which is the same as Procrit. Other uses are for people who get chemotherapy, and need a boost for their bone marrow to get the red cells up. It will not work well for those who have diseases of the bone marrow. But there are exceptions.
