Hi, I wonder if anyone who has had radiation treatments can tell me some alternatives to Compazine for nausea? I am scheduled to start my first radiation session tomorrow, and the Compazine makes me drowsy. I have to drive my self to treatments almost 130 miles round trip for the next 5 weeks, and I hope to find a non-drowsy medication for this. I have Stage III Uterine Cancer,.. not sure if it makes a difference regarding the area. Thank you for any help with this.

Hello

You should ask the Radiation Oncologist about this. But there are certainly good alternatives if Compazine makes you drowsy. Certainly things like Zofran may help.

Zofran is a wonderful antiemetic. If that doesn't work, maybe ask your doctor about adding a steroid (ex: decadron). Also, I've taken care of some patients who swear by ginger drops (candy). They say ginger really helps with the nausea.

yes ginger is a really great alternative. My grandmother would give my mom a packet of chinese ginger candy to help prevent vomitting and upset stomach. I had a fever just a couple weeks ago and started vomitting but my mom will give me chinese ginger candy to help my stomach and it really works!

Thank you for all your suggestions! I did try ginger, and the results were remarkable! In a matter of a couple of days, the vomitting (I could not even hold water down) went away, and I could actually eat again. I continued with the compazine-- the zofran was out of my reach financially; so I just dealt with the drowsiness as best I could (I have severe insomnia--so it may not effect other people as such). I do recommend trying the ginger for anyone experiencing similar symptoms. Again, thank you all for your help!
