My father was diagnosed with cancer 5 months ago now. He had surgery to remove two tumours from his upper bowel, and numerous smaller cancers from his abdominal cavity. Numerous lymph nodes were also removed, all positive for cancer.

I live half a country away (my family are on the west coast, I am on the east coast of Australia) and I am finding it difficult to get real information from them. My parents dont wish to worry me.

Dad has had a quad bypass some ten years ago now, and was already on numerous meds for his heart and back conditions.

Chemo was started 4 months ago, but has failed to have any affect.

My Mum called me a couple of days ago to tell me that Dad is getting sicker. There are now approx 5 tennis-ball sized tumours - bowel and abdomin - and signs that it has spread to the liver and possibly lungs. He is on oxygen now also.

I am told that the oncologist has determined that there is no further treatment that can be done, and that now it is just a matter of time. Dad's pain is getting worse.

I am scared of not being there for him when he needs me the most, as the family support system is not so good.

Is there any way that one can estimate the time left? I cannot afford to fly over there more than once in twelve months (return flight around a months wages when flying on short notice) and either way will lose my job when I go.

Advice desperately needed.

Natalie

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is nearly impossible to predict how soon he might expire, but given how sick he is, one could expect it within a month. There is no way to make a more accurate prediction.

best regards,
Leo
