Ok, so my husband's father and grandfather(paternal) both had leukemia. His recently diagnosed father is over 70 and the doctors say there is no point in treating it, since it's too early right now, and something else will likely kill him before the leukemia does.

My husband is of the mind that there's nothing he can do to prevent it if he's going to get it. But I have no idea about leukemia, and I wanted to know if it's probable that he will get it, or if there is anything we can do at this point. He's 34 and I'd like to keep him around a good while longer.

Hello

There are very rare cases of familial leukemia. What kind of leukemia does his father have ? Was it the same as his grandfather ?

best regards,
Dr Leo

Ok, I'm not 100% sure, but I think they had the same kind. And I don't know what kind, but from what I've been reading, I'm assuming it's chronic lymphocytic leukemia, but that's really just guessing. Both men were diagnosed in old age, and my father in law was told he can live another 15 years with this disease being untreated.

So would both of them getting it be a coincidence, or should we be concerned for my husband?

Hello

I would advise you to seek a consultation with a medical geneticist. Or if you are close to a large Cancer Center you could get an appointment at a Cancer Risk Clinic.

best regards
Dr Leo
