Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of your well wishes and the comments on my lympedema-phobia post. The anestesiologist tried to put an IV in my foot one time but the vein collapsed. He said he would not poke around any more and put it very low, almost at the knuckle area, in my right hand. I had the port put in and the IV taken out. So far so good from a lymphedema stand point. I am however allergic to adhesives and I have blisters all over the wound site from where they covered the port and insertion areas with bandages. I guess I'll have to write in a big marker across my chest that I have this allergy since when I tell people about it, they seem to forget it at bandage time. So, I'm back on pain killers more for the blisters than the port insertion surgery. I start my first round of chemo at 1pm this Monday. I'm nervous but also ready for the fight. I hope the blisters clear up before the chemo side effects kick in.
Thanks again to everyone for your concerns.

Brava, JM! Sounds like you did manage to get the lymphedema awareness across, even if your veins wouldn't cooperate. SO SORRY about the adhesive allergy. The blisters are like burns--very painful, hard to wear any clothes at all. I have the same problem and also have a hard time making doctors aware of it. I've purchased some "wipes" called Skin-Prep (made by Smith-Nephew) at the drug store, and they do seem to help protect my skin when there's tape involved (though they're not fool-proof and the tape needs to be removed as soon as possible). Of course, you do still have to convince the medical folks to use them--not so easy to supervise when you're anesthetized!

You're in my prayers as you start chemo. It's an extreme sport, for sure, and it sounds like you're psyched for it. Your nervousness provides an adrenaline burst that athlete's use to ready themselves for the win!

All best,
Binney

Hi JM,
I never had a port, got an i.v. each time.....ouch... lol I'm curious, they did put the port in the opposite side as your MRM and node disection didn't they?
I love your attitude. I think we all are in shock when we first hear with have this crappy (being nice there...lol) disease and are petrified, but something in us kicks in and we get mad and are ready to fight and kick some cancer butt...... You go girl Smile
You're in my prayers and let us know how the 1st treatment goes.

Hi Nancy,

I had bilateral MRM on October 20th. 18+/20 nodes on left and 16+/16 nodes on right. I don't really have a good side. The port was placed in my right jugular vein. It's still sore, I was hoping it wouldn't be by today, since I start my first chemo round in a few hours. Oh well, I'll deal with it.
THanks for your positive comments, I appreciate it.
Jan
