Hi, my name is Colessif, and I am 17 years old. My dad, who was never a drinker, doesnt and never smoked, (except the occasional cigar after a thanksgiving meal) and never did drugs was diagnosed with Biliary Cancer, or Stage 4, secondary liver cancer, the names confuse me, and ive heard both of them so i just figured id throw both out there.
now this may seem odd, but he is 74 years old. Other than the liver cancer, i would say his health is almost spectacular. the reason i say almost is because about 8 or 9 years ago, maybe longer, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and got radiation and it hasnt been a problem, until about two years ago when it spread to his lymphatic system. the tumor there was removed, and no one understands where his liver cancer came from (not even the doctors) the best theory is that it went thru the lymphatic system, and metastisized to his liver before they got the infected lymph node out. As of now, his prostate cancer has been widdled down to nothing.
4 weeks ago (tomorrow tuesday sept 1st) my father was put on a combination of Gemcitabine, Dexamethasone, Aloxi, and Cytril tablets (I think i got those right) (blieve it or not, his side effects to the chemo are pretty good, he is anemic and very fatigued, but shows no sigsns of sickness from the chemo directly i dont think) tomorrow, he is going to go for a check up to see if things have gotten better, worse, or are the same. And i believe is also going to see about an appointment at Memorial: Slon Kettering (i hope he does, ive been trying to stay on top of that for weeks, but when he last called they told him to wait until his 4th week of chemo when he has his checkup)
on top of the drugs, i have forced different drugs down his throat like Milk thistle tablets and Iron tablets (for the anemia from the chemo) hoping it might help him in some way.
if you havent noticed by the way im talking about most stuff, my dad is a doctor, and has basicly taught me everything i just told you, he kinda made me a mini cancer expert wannabe in 3 weeks, go figure
I was looking onthe internet today, and say something about mayo clinic and liver transplants, i was hoping if someone could enlighten me on the liver transplant rules and what not, because my outlook on them is kinda foggy, ive been reading different things that contridict each other.
I was hoping, that since my dads primary tumor is no where to be found and hopefully out of his body, he might be elgible for a transplant. but i noticed that age is a factor. which is very upsetting because im still a young person, and i dont want to be with out a father just because his age is 4 years over, when i think personally that if he didnt have this, there would be nothing stopping him from living until he was 95, which would be a huge impact on my life in general.
i apologize for the really long post, if you have just skipped to the bottom, please just read the last paragraph before this one.
p.s. i know this sounds selfish and might be rude, but im sure anyone can relate that they want their family member to survive, in some cases i hear that doctors get a sort of leeway towards medical things, and i was wondering if it applied in this at all.
I was also wondering if since he was never a user of drugs and alcohol, if that will help prolong his life significantly or at all?
