Hi avahsmom
So sorry to hear about your daughters enlarged nodes, it must be very troubling for you. You need to take her to the doctor as soon as you can. Don't panic as it is most likely an infection, babies have very active immune systems and enlarged nodes are nearly always a sign they are fighting an infection and they are very common in small children, but the doctor needs to have a look in case she needs antibiotics. Try and relax I know this is difficult in your situation, get to the doctor as soon as you can for your benefit as well as your daughters.
Good luck and wishing you all the best. _________________ Age 52

As a survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma I can tell you a few things about cancerous nodes. The first thing the doctor should be looking for is whether or not the nodes are tender -- that is, whether or not your daughter is sensitive when they are touched, or if she feels pain. She may react when the nodes are touched (cry or squirm) in a way that would indicate this sensitivity, but with her age this may be hard to tell. Swollen nodes happen when a body fights infection, but they are usually sore or sensitive. If she feels nothing, it could be a sign of cancer. Of course, this isn't always the case. Some children have high pain thresholds and won't be bothered by swollen lymph nodes.
The second is how long this has been lasting. Has your daughter had any bloodwork done? They should check her blood counts. Of course, the blood counts won't show everything. For both cancer and infection, white blood cell counts will be elevated. Blood tests may help, though.
If you are unsure, as your doc why he/she's just watching to make sure the nodes don't grow larger. If the answer doesn't help you, ask to see a specialist. I had a few nodes in my neck that were enlarged, but stopped growing after a few months; they were the same size for about half a year before my cancer was found. I don't want this to scare you. I tell you to ask your doc for more information because there are more things than lymphoma that cause swollen nodes, and your doc may have a very good reason for their approach.
What the previous responder said is true: this could all be from various infections your young daughter is fighting off. Try not to worry. But make sure you see a doctor who gives you an explanation and answers all of your questions. _________________ Kari Eileen -- Stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor and representative of maddoxoncology.com |

Hi all
Hodgkins and NHL are very very unlikely in children under 5 years of age. In a child under 1 year of age it is virtually unheard of.

Hi avahsmom
I didn't read your post very well and I missed the fact that you have seen the doctor already. You have done the right thing all you need to do is wait but I can understand that this is worrying you. Watch and wait is the general rule that doctors follow so try and relax if you can. Wishing all the best for you and your daughter. Good luck _________________ Age 52
