Hi all,

My 38 year old son in law was diagnosed with HL today. It's to early to know what the treatment plan will be.
My 36 year old daughter and he have been married only 2 years and were trying to start a family(with not much sucess).
How does radiation/chemotherapy affect sperm cells? Can treatments cause sterility/birth defects? Should they consider banking his sperm before treatment starts?

I'm so grateful for this forum!

Hi
Sorry to hear your Son has HL. It is very successfully treated these days so he has every chance of ejoying many more trips around the Sun.
As far as fertility issues are concerned this is something your Son should discuss with his doctor before the chemo starts as it can cause sterility. He can get a sperm count done at the same time just in case he already has problems.

Cheers and Good luck

kkt, I am so sorry to hear the your SIL has cancer. Most doctors recommend not to have children while taking treatments. Some times that has to do with the possibility of birth defects or depletion of spems. At others it has more to do with saving energy; chemo can wipe out a person. In either case, ChemoMan has the correct answer: Have your SIL talk to his own medical team.

You and your SIL are in my thoughts and prayers.
