My mother in law has recently had blood work done. Her Sodium was 149, Chlorde was 113, Glucose L was 111, AST was 54, ALT was 72, Alk Phos was 127, Hemoglobin was 16.2, HCT was 48.7,MCV was 99.1, MCH was 33.0, Chol was 305. These were all listed as High. So they put her on cholesterol medicine and ran test again. All still came back High. They did a diabetes test and she was diagnosed with diabetes. But they are now sending her to an onocologist for the hemoglobin being high.

We are concerened with the hemoglobin being high and liver being high. Can you read anything from the things above being the levels they are at, and give an honest opinion of what could be wrong with her? Does she have a cancer and if so what kind do you think these levels would suggest? We just wanted some kind of answers before we see an onocologist so we can be somewhat prepared for what they might tell us.

Thanks for your advice and expert help!

Hello

I can't give you specific medical advice, but I can write about some things you mentioned. First of all, if they sent her because her hemoglobin is high, a few diseases come to mind: polycythemia vera and other myelodysplastic diseases. High hemoglobin can also be caused if you live in the altitude, or if you have severe lung disease such as emphysema. I can also say that her hemoglobin is only midly elevated, and her liver chemistries are also very midly elevated, but if they would like a specialist to see I would see no problem at all. Obvisouly whoever has examined her knows a lot more about her than I do, and has seen the whole picture.

best regards,
Leo
